No stranger to long-distance motor racing, Porsche and TAG Heuer House Ambassador @patrickdempsey couldn’t be more delighted to wear the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963. Dempsey’s passion for racing is evident in what we see of his exploits on social media – he is a Porsche driver and owner of a racing team – and the detail captured in the design of the new wristwatch will no doubt excite fellow petrolheads and watch fans.
The American actor famously known as “McDreamy” after his role in Grey’s Anatomy is credited with infusing the racetrack with “captivating allure” as he “effortlessly [blends] performance and style in a tribute to speed and elegance.”
The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963, limited to just 963 pieces worldwide, features subdials inspired by Porsche’s innovative LED light design on the modern-day icon, the Porsche 911. The four Super-LumiNova (SLN) blocks and an SLN-coated date revealer illuminate the Porsche-inspired design elements in the dark, resonating with drivers racing around the clock. The red indexes at 4 o’ clock evoke the electric atmosphere leading up to the countdown before a race start.
Other notable details in the skeleton dial are the tubular shapes associated with a Porsche’s racing car chassis. The bezel is made from forged carbon, which mirrors the lightweight, high-performance components of the Porsche 963. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963 showcases exceptional craftsmanship with its in-house TH20-00 movement. The unique red column wheel highlights the technical expertise of the vertical clutch chronograph mechanism. The vertical coupling ensures smooth and “jump-free” operation, akin to connecting a car’s engine flywheel and transmission. The watch’s rubber strap design, inspired by the low-drag NACA air inlets seen on Porsche race cars, such as the record-breaking Porsche 917, reflects the brands’ shared heritage in endurance racing.
The watch’s colour scheme—white, red, and black—pays homage to Porsche motorsport’s iconic colours, making the wearer feel connected to the thrilling world of motorsports.
Distinctive Porsche elements are integrated into the design, such as a luminescent Porsche logo on the bezel, the Porsche 963 logo on the strap, and a Porsche steering wheel motif in the oscillating mass. Additionally, a 3D Porsche logo is featured on the side of the steel case. For about 70 years, TAG Heuer and Porsche have shared a strong bond rooted in motorsports, particularly connected through the Carrera name. This name originated from the Carrera Panamericana race, which inspired Porsche to name its most powerful engines Carrera and Jack Heuer to name his 1963 chronograph after the race. Both brands also have historical ties to the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, instilling a sense of tradition and legacy in every TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963. Dempsey has also raced at Le Mans, having pursued his passion for racing as a member of the Porsche motorsport family since 2013.
In his debut season, Dempsey placed fourth in the GTE-Am class at the Le Mans 24 Hours with the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. He also secured two podium finishes in the American Le Mans Series, earning second place at Laguna Seca and third at Austin. In the 2014 season, Dempsey achieved fifth place at Le Mans in a Porsche 911 RSR and a team podium finish at the Tudor United SportsCar Championship round at Virginia International Raceway, where they placed third with a Porsche 911 GT America. The team also recorded four podium finishes at Daytona, Road America, VIR, and Road Atlanta, along with several other top-10 finishes with their Porsche GT Americas.
