Testing Volvo’s Refined XC60

The updated XC60 makes its South African debut, blending subtle design refinements, upgraded technology, and hybrid efficiency to cement its place in the premium SUV segment.

Volvo has always understood the art of quiet confidence — the kind that doesn’t shout for attention, yet effortlessly commands it. With the launch of the updated XC60 in South Africa, Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) signals not only a product refresh but an affirmation of its ambition in the premium SUV segment.

The brand invited me and other media to Cape Town to experience the refreshed XC60 and its role as a vehicle partner in the Standard Bank Polo Series — a fitting setting where elegance, athleticism and refinement intersect. From the moment we were whisked from Cape Town International Airport to the postcard-perfect Val de Vie Estate in Paarl, the tone was set: a celebration of Scandinavian luxury against the backdrop of one of the Western Cape’s most exclusive destinations.

After a concise media briefing and light lunch, it was time to experience the XC60 on what was admittedly a very short drive route — Volvo’s trademark launch drive approach — though the SUV’s composure still made an impression.

Strong Credentials, Stronger Intent

The first generation of the XC60 was launched in 2008, followed by the second generation in 2017. Since the global debut of the current generation in 2017, the XC60 has been Volvo’s top-selling model and one of Europe’s most successful plug-in hybrids. More than 1.5 million units have found homes worldwide, with 2024 marking a record year. In South Africa alone, 298 units have been sold year-to-date (January to October 2025), underscoring its appeal among local premium-SUV buyers.

With this update, Volvo aims squarely at the heart of the mid-range premium SUV class, an arena dominated by established titans such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5 and Lexus NX. And while Chinese entrants such as the Omoda C9 PHEV are stirring interest among aspirational buyers, the XC60’s heritage, safety reputation and global success remain powerful differentiators.

Subtle Refinements, Noticeable Evolution

At first glance, the changes may seem understated, but that — in true Volvo style — is the point. This is refinement, not reinvention.

A trained eye will spot the redesigned front grille pattern, inspired by the flagship XC90, along with three new exterior colours: Aurora Silver, Forest Lake and Mulberry Red.

Inside, Volvo has introduced fresh interior tones (charcoal, navy blue and blonde) and upgraded the user experience with a crisp 11.2-inch anti-glare screen borrowed from the EX30 and EX90.

For audiophiles, the upgraded 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system promises deeper immersion, supported by improved sound insulation. Ultra derivatives now include a panoramic sunroof as standard. Add improved wireless charging, redesigned cupholders and more thoughtful storage, and the cabin feels even more premium and intuitive.

Powertrains: Efficiency Meets Polish

The XC60 range continues with mild-hybrid (B5) and plug-in hybrid (T8) options.

B5 Mild Hybrid (Core & Plus)

  • 2.0-litre turbo petrol + 48-volt mild hybrid
  • 183kW of power / 350Nm torque
  • 0–100km/h: 6.9 sec
  • Fuel economy: 7.6 L/100km
  • All-wheel drive and 8-speed auto

Smooth, refined and surprisingly brisk, it’s the all-rounder of the lineup.

T8 Plug-in Hybrid (Plus & Ultra)

  • 340kW of power / 709Nm of torque
  • 0–100km/h: 4.8 sec
  • Electric range: up to 81km
  • Fuel economy: 1.8 L/100km

This “Twin Engine” PHEV is genuinely quick – bordering on performance-SUV territory — while delivering meaningful electric-only driving for everyday commutes.

On the Road: Composed, Premium and Purposeful

Even on the short route provided, the XC60 delivered what Volvo does best: measured luxury. The steering is light, the cabin calming and the ride plush without becoming overly soft. Everything feels intuitive, safe, and thoughtfully considered — traits that have endeared Volvo to families, executives, and design-conscious buyers around the world.

Grant Locke, Managing Director of VCSA, summed it up well:

“The new XC60 delivers clear, practical improvements in design, technology and comfort, building on what has already made this model a global success — ensuring drivers enjoy enhanced performance, smarter technology and a safer, more comfortable driving experience.”

Final Word

The updated Volvo XC60 remains one of the most compelling interpretations of modern luxury — understated yet sophisticated, safe yet spirited, and decidedly Scandinavian in its restraint. It stands as a confident alternative to German rivals and keeps Volvo firmly in the premium conversation.

The only potential drawback is the T8’s electric-only range, which still falls short of the increasingly competitive 100km-plus benchmark. A 200km-plus range (as offered by the XC70 in China) would elevate its offering even further.

That said, the XC60 feels poised, elegant and intelligently upgraded. I look forward to spending extended time with it for a more comprehensive test — and to seeing whether Volvo’s quiet evolution continues to speak louder than its competition.
