Mercedes-AMG’s New Electric Grand Tourer

The new GT 4-Door Coupé combines record-shattering performance, cutting-edge EV technology, and the emotional appeal that has long defined the AMG badge.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé is a bold statement of intent from Affalterbach, signalling that AMG’s electric future will not be defined by silence, restraint, or compromise.

Built on the new AMG.EA high-performance electric architecture, the four-door performance coupé introduces a wave of pioneering technology, including axial-flux electric motors used for the first time in a series-production EV. With three motors – two at the rear and one at the front – the flagship AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupé produces up to 860kW, while the AMG GT 55 delivers 600kW.

The result is staggering. Mercedes-AMG says the GT 63 can sprint from 0–100km/h in just 2.1 seconds, reach 200km/h in 6.4 seconds, and continue to a top speed of 300km/h when fitted with the optional Driver’s Package.

But this is not only about numbers. The design makes an equally strong case. I get the shape. It reminds me of the kind of luxury performance sedans and four-door coupés that have long occupied a special corner of the high-end market: the Aston Martin Rapide, Porsche Panamera, and Maserati Quattroporte. In that context, the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé feels like a clear signal that Mercedes-Benz wants a bigger slice of a market where performance, luxury, and dramatic presence matter in equal measure.

The silhouette is long, low, and purposeful, with a fastback roofline, muscular shoulders, short overhangs, and a dramatic rear diffuser. The AMG grille, available with illumination for the first time, gives the car a futuristic face, while star-shaped daytime running lights and turbine-style rear lamps add theatre.

Under the skin, AMG has focused on endurance as much as acceleration. Its new high-performance battery uses 2 660 cylindrical cells with direct cooling, allowing the car to deliver repeated bursts of power without losing its edge. Charging is equally headline-grabbing, with a claimed 600kW peak charging capability, enabling more than 460km of range to be added in 10 minutes where suitable infrastructure exists.

Inside, the GT 4-Door Coupé combines sports-car focus with grand-touring comfort. A driver-oriented cockpit, AMG Race Engineer controls, MBUX digital displays, and optional rear comfort features underline its dual purpose.

Perhaps most intriguingly, AMG has also engineered emotion into the electric experience. The AMG Force S+ mode recreates the sound and feel of a V8, complete with simulated gearshifts and haptic feedback.

For AMG loyalists, this may be the bridge between nostalgia and tomorrow. The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé is expected to launch in South Africa next year.
