Having experienced the sporty CLE Coupé earlier this year in KwaZulu-Natal and over a week-long test drive, I was intrigued to see how the cabriolet version would amplify the CLE’s allure. At the national media launch in Cape Town, I joined fellow motoring scribes in exploring the CLE Cabriolet along some of South Africa’s most scenic routes, an experience that turned out to be as captivating as the car itself.

The journey began at Hotel Verde, just a stone’s throw from Cape Town International Airport. From there, the CLE Cabriolet effortlessly handled the sweeping curves of Sir Lowry’s Pass, the R321 to Grabouw, and the picturesque stretches leading to Benguela Cove near Hermanus. These roads became more than just a test route; they were a stage where the CLE Cabriolet’s dynamic performance and elegant design came alive.

The CLE Cabriolet distinguishes itself with a classic fabric acoustic soft top, available in striking black, red, or grey. This roof, opening and closing within 20 seconds at speeds of up to 60 km/h, encapsulates both timeless charm and modern engineering. The design seamlessly merges dynamic performance with year-round comfort, offering drivers a perfect escape from the ordinary.
Innovative features like the Aircap wind deflector system and Airscarf neck-level heating that was also introduced in the BMW 4 Series Convertible, elevate the open-air experience. I first took the reins of the CLE 300 Cabriolet, resplendent in black metallic paint and red leather seats. Its 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine delivers 190 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque, ensuring a spirited drive that responds eagerly in Sport mode. The seamless blend of luxury and performance made it a joy to navigate both highways and winding routes.
Switching to the CLE 200 Cabriolet after lunch, I was greeted by a white metallic exterior and macchiato beige seats. With a slightly less powerful engine (150 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque), it still offered a smooth and composed drive. Along the scenic coastal stretch of Clarence Drive, it became clear that the CLE 200 is ideal for those who prioritise elegance over outright power.
A Feast for the Senses
What truly sets the CLE Cabriolet apart is its attention to detail. Optional Burmester 3D surround sound transforms every drive into a concert, while thoughtful touches like the Airscarf system allow you to enjoy the open air even on cooler days. Every element is designed to enhance the senses, making this a car that connects with its driver on a deeper level.

The Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet is more than a car; it’s a statement of sophisticated luxury and freedom. While the CLE 300 Cabriolet might edge out as my personal favourite for its extra power, the CLE 200 Cabriolet holds its own as an elegant, accessible option in the lineup.
For those yearning for more performance, the upcoming AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet, set to arrive in early 2025, will likely turn heads and challenge rivals like the BMW M4 Competition Convertible and Audi S5 Cabriolet.
With pricing starting at R1 515 350 for the CLE 200 and R1 573 651 for the CLE 300, the CLE Cabriolet positions itself as a luxury contender. While it comes at a premium over competitors like the BMW 420i Convertible, it delivers a charming combination of style, innovation and indulgence.
