Some watches are built for checking the time. Others invite you to linger, to admire the way light plays across the dial, and to enjoy the quiet satisfaction of wearing something beautifully made. The Bell & Ross BR 05 36mm Ice Blue Steel sits firmly in the latter category.
It’s larger than my usual preference, yet it surprised me by feeling completely at home on my wrist. At 36mm wide and just 8.5mm thick, it has presence without being overpowering, and the integrated steel bracelet curves comfortably to follow the wrist’s contours. I would love to see a micro-adjustment on the clasp for a perfect fit — always a boon for smaller wrists — but even without it, the watch sits securely without pinching.
In the hand, the watch feels reassuringly substantial, but that weight melts away when worn. The ice blue dial is, quite simply, divine — luminous in daylight with a subtle sunray finish that shifts tone as you move. It has the kind of colour that draws compliments without demanding them, pairing as easily with a silk blouse as with weekend denim.
Bell & Ross has ensured that the BR-05’s aviation-inspired “round within a square” design translates seamlessly to this more compact format. The polished bevels catch the light, contrasting with the finely satin-brushed surfaces. The hour and minute hands are skeletonised and rhodium-plated, filled with Super-LumiNova X1. The BR 05 36mm runs on the automatic BR-CAL.329 calibre, offering a 54-hour power reserve and 100m water resistance. It’s not an open caseback, which some might miss at this price point (close to R100 000), but the elegance and finish on the visible side more than hold attention.
This is a timepiece that’s less about urgency and more about presence — a daily companion that’s as at ease in the boardroom as it is on a weekend escape.
