Sauvignon Blanc holds a prominent position in the South African wine landscape, with domestic sales reaching 15.3 million litres and an impressive 60.5 million litres exported in 2023 alone. This cultivar is not only the most valuable in South Africa but also contributed over R1.6 billion to the export market last year. It enjoys a strong presence in major global markets, including the UK, Germany, Canada, the US, and France, underscoring the rapid growth of the industry.
In her new role as the Chairperson of Sauvignon Blanc South Africa, Elunda Basson is expected to play a crucial part in guiding the sector towards continued success. Drawing on her extensive experience in winemaking, she brings a forward-thinking vision that emphasises premiumisation and innovation. Her leadership could herald a new era for South African Sauvignon Blanc, enhancing its reputation and market presence worldwide.
YLA: Congratulations on your new role as Chairperson of Sauvignon Blanc South Africa. Can you explain what this fascinating job description entails?
Elunda: I will represent all member winemakers and brands in South Africa that are passionate about Sauvignon Blanc. It’s my job to ensure that we get the local and international attention that Sauvignon Blanc deserves and promote the message of quality and value that this beautiful grape variety and wine delivers to our consumers globally. Additionally, I have to create opportunities for producers and winemakers to learn from each other, share knowledge and innovations, and align our vision for quality and growth for the future.
YLA: What are you most excited about in your new role?
Elunda: I truly value the opportunity to influence others and share knowledge. I know that achieving continuous growth in my career often means stepping out of my comfort zone and facing moments of discomfort and insecurity. It’s during these times that I learn and evolve. I’ve observed that great leaders possess this ability, and I aspire to give back to this industry by actively contributing to the growth of Sauvignon Blanc. My passion for this varietal drives me, and I genuinely believe in its potential.
YLA: Can you share some insight on how you believe Sauvignon Blanc can be elevated in South Africa?
Elunda: I believe that as an industry, we should concentrate on delivering quality and positioning ourselves at premium price points. We need to market ourselves as equal to the other exceptional regions around the world that produce Sauvignon Blanc. It’s essential for us to embrace and highlight our regional identity and unique styles, showcasing the diversity we have to offer with pride.
YLA: Can you share a little bit about your history with winemaking?
Elunda: I’ve always known I wanted to work in agriculture and become a farmer. When I began my studies at Stellenbosch, I quickly realised that the main agricultural focus in the Boland area was wine. If I wanted to stay here, studying wine was necessary. I completed my studies at Elsenburg in 1997 and kicked off my career by working a few vintages at Rickety Bridge Vineyards in Franschhoek. After that, I took some time to travel through Europe and even did a harvest in California. My journey continued as I became the red winemaker at Nederburg for eight years. This was followed by a rewarding twelve years crafting sparkling wines at Pongracz and The House of JC le Roux. In 2019, I joined the Steenberg team. Now, after 28 vintages, I find myself in Constantia, still loving every minute of it.
YLA: What drives your passion for winemaking and how did it start?
Elunda: Winemaking is truly an artistic expression for me – it’s so much more than just a regular 9 to 5 job. It has transformed into a way of life that perfectly matches my extroverted and passionate personality. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I feel incredibly blessed to have worked with the fruit of the vine for the past three decades.
YLA: What has been the highlight of your winemaking career so far?
Elunda: I’ve been fortunate to experience some incredible highlights in my journey. While awards and accolades are nice, nothing compares to the thrill of stepping into a space where people are enjoying a wonderful meal with their loved ones – and seeing my bottle of wine on their table. That’s the ultimate joy for me!
YLA: In a somewhat male-dominated industry, do you ever feel intimidated, or has it affected you?
Elunda: I believe that tough girls in male-dominated industries thrive on the challenge of proving their worth and demonstrating that we are just as competent as our male peers. I’ve always made it a point to work hard, conduct my research, and show up fully prepared. Having the right attitude and exuding confidence are crucial, but what I’m truly passionate about is building a network of women who support one another in this field. It’s essential for us to lift each other up as we navigate these challenges together.
YLA: As a mentor, how are you empowering the next generation of winemakers?
Elunda: I strive to be a winemaker that others feel comfortable reaching out to for questions, advice, or assistance. I genuinely enjoy helping younger winemakers find permanent positions within the South African industry, and I also encourage those looking for international experience or opportunities to travel. I believe these experiences can be incredibly valuable for their growth. At Steenberg Vineyards, we welcome young interns into our cellar during the harvesting season, where they can gain hands-on experience while we share our knowledge with them. It’s a truly enriching experience for both them and us.
YLA: Sauvignon Blanc aside, are there any other wines you’re passionate about or enjoy that you can recommend?
Elunda: Absolutely, I believe in embracing the full spectrum of wine. I never want to limit myself to just one style or varietal; there’s so much to explore! Every celebration, every gathering with loved ones, and every delightful meal presents a unique opportunity for wine selection. I love enjoying bubbly with my girlfriends, savouring Sauvignon Blanc with sushi or fish, and uncorking a great vintage of my favourite red to complement a hearty beef stew. Each moment deserves its perfect pairing!
