Montblanc and Wes Anderson are back on set – or rather, above the clouds – with a second cinematic collaboration that celebrates the timeless joy of writing. The maison, known for elevating the art of putting pen to paper since 1906, continues its partnership with the acclaimed director in a new short film titled Let’s Write.
In true Anderson style, the film takes place in the surreal Montblanc Observatory High-Mountain Library, a dreamlike hideaway inhabited by a group of mountaineers played by Rupert Friend, Michael Cera, and Anderson himself. Joining them are long-time collaborator Waris Ahluwalia and emerging talent Esther McGregor. The narrative unfolds with playful absurdity and quiet reflection, mixing metaphysical musings and gift-giving with dry wit and unexpected twists.
A new setting – the Montblanc Voyage of Panorama – adds layers of metaphor and visual delight. Within a stylised train carriage, the characters reflect on writing and travel as dual forms of introspection. As Anderson’s character notes, the experience “demonstrates the idea of the literal, metaphorical and poetic ‘journey.’” Each stop becomes an invitation to pause, reconnect, and, most importantly, write.
“Montblanc has such an extraordinary, rich heritage and DNA; an endless source of creative material and stories to be discovered and told,” says Marco Tomasetta, Montblanc Artistic Director. “In Wes Anderson, we have found the perfect narrator, offering an original lens through which people can discover our Maison. The campaign aims to generate a different kind of emotion that customers can experience at every touchpoint possible, reawakening their curiosity for writing and inspiring them to put pen to paper.”
The campaign’s success lies in how it blends Montblanc’s historic elegance with Anderson’s offbeat storytelling. Known for crafting lifetime companions in writing instruments, leather, and watches, Montblanc’s signature craftsmanship is present throughout the film. The new Montblanc Writing Traveler Bag, the iconic Montblanc Meisterstück, the “Schreiberling” a fountain pen designed by Anderson, a Portable Writing Table, and a historic Minerva pocket watch make notable appearances.
“Anderson’s style defies traditional notions of luxury storytelling. The short film will stop viewers in their tracks, it will likely leave a lasting imprint,” says Stephanie Radl, Montblanc’s Global Director of Brand Relations and Communications. “By disarming audiences, it encourages them to interact with the brand very differently. Ultimately, they will see that in addition to Montblanc’s craftsmanship and design, the maison is about inspiring creativity in all its forms and finding new original ways to tell stories.”
The film was co-directed by Roman Coppola, with a creative team that included producers Jeremy Dawson and John Peet, director of photography Darius Khondji, production designers Adam Stockhausen and Stephan Gessler, costume designer Milena Canonero, and production by the Babelsberg Production Group.
Let’s Write launched globally on June 19, 2025. Campaign visuals by Charlie Gray – featuring cast members alongside Montblanc Global Brand Ambassadors Jing Boran, Xin Zhilei, Joey King, and Daniel Brühl – will roll out in the ensuing months.
