In its latest release, Montblanc turns its attention to Henri Matisse (1869–1954), a revolutionary force in modern art. His bold handling of colour, daring shapes, and radical simplification redefined the visual language of the 20th century. From the vibrant canvases of Fauvism to the groundbreaking gouaches découpées of his later years, Matisse continually distilled form to its purest expression.
Developed in partnership with Maison Matisse, the Homage to Henri Matisse collection explores a different chapter of the French artist’s story in each edition. The overall shape of the writing instruments is inspired by Matisse’s sculptures, characterised by fluid, organic forms, while the clip references his cut-outs, particularly The Sheaf (1953). As a signature of the Masters of Art line, the proportions of each edition approximate the golden ratio, a timeless aesthetic principle connecting many of the world’s most admired artworks.
The Limited Edition 4810, inspired by Blue Nude III (1952), translates the artist’s bold blue-and-white composition into a striking writing instrument. When rotated, the barrel reveals the seated female figure, echoing Matisse’s process of “drawing with scissors”.
The Limited Edition 888 celebrates The Romanian Blouse (1940), with textured lacquer that recalls the canvas and embroidered motifs translated into intricate engravings.
The Limited Edition 96 honours The Dance II, capturing rhythm and movement with bronze dancers encircling the barrel.
Finally, the Limited Edition 8 — inspired by Purple Robe and Anemones (1937) — is crafted from solid white gold with enamel, gemstones, and pavé-set diamonds.
