The art fraternity and the public can look forward to the annual #ThatsWhatSheSaid Celebratory Dinner presented by ITOO Artinsure, in honour of one of South Africa’s leading women artists, Mary Sibande, whose creativity has made a significant impact on the contemporary art landscape. The dinner pays homage to Sibande’s stellar artistic practice as well as her illustrious career. Supported by a diverse number of partners, which includes YLA as media partner the dinner is a significant step towards building a community of interlocutors, determined to support a cohort of women and women. The dinner also plays a role as a fundraising event, which will see a significant percentage of the proceeds raised to assist two young deserving emerging woman artists mentored by Mary Sibande over the last few years.
#ThatsWhatSheSaid is an initiative specifically created to support and amplify the voices, stories and narratives of women and women – identifying artists in the South African Contemporary Art Landscape. The dinner will take place on the 15th of August 2024, from 6pm to 9pm, at the vibrant and artful Villa Arcadia (Oxford Road, Parktown) situated in the historic surroundings of what is today the Hollard headquarters where iTOO Artinsure is based. “It is an honour and a pleasure to celebrate an esteemed artist whilst supporting and promoting the talented women in our unique South African art industry,” says ITOO Artinsure’s Product Head, Gail Bosch.
In the midst of the celebrations, two women owned businesses have also come on board to support the initiative and both align with the values enshrined in the #ThatsWhatSheSaid’s motto, which is ‘Stories by women, For Women, In Spirit of Women’. One of the businesses is Zamindlela, a platform founded by interior designer, Tselane Bolofo. Zamindlela was inspired by Tselane’s grandfather, a strong African man, whose name means ‘to make a way’. This name embodies their mission to forge a unique journey through the rich landscapes of African art and design.
The business is dedicated to making a way for African narratives, celebrating the diversity and beauty of our culture. The collections include items sourced and made in collaboration with artisans from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Another woman – owned business that is in full swing to be part of the journey is KGOPELO, founded by sisters Dimpho and Tebogo Mashile.
The pioneering South African skincare brand and custodian of African culture and creativity, uniquely intertwines indigenous knowledge with modern technology to offer a blend of premium skincare and artistic expression. With a distinct interpretation of African expression, the brand is a symbol of contemporary beauty, paying homage to African indigenous knowledge and heritage while incorporating innovative, effective formulas and technology. This is what she said about being part of the journey. “We see synergy in the craftsmanship of art and the attention to detail in creating our skincare line,” says Dimpho Mashile
