Exclusive, powerful, luxurious and rare — these words barely capture the essence of the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-Performance, a vehicle that stands as a testament to automotive engineering and design excellence. From the moment I laid eyes on it, I knew this wasn’t just another luxury sedan; it was a masterpiece.
This is no ordinary car you’ll find on the showroom floor. The S 63 E-Performance is available exclusively on a build-to-order basis, with a starting price of R4 739 000, reaching over R5 million when fully equipped. Courtesy of Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s PR division, I had the privilege of test-driving this remarkable machine, a rare opportunity that offered a glimpse into the pinnacle of luxury motoring.
First Impressions
Wherever I went, the S 63 E-Performance drew admiration, curiosity and even envy. On a journey to Limpopo for a Lobola ceremony (African marriage procedure) as one of the chief negotiators, the car became more than a vehicle; it was a symbol of prestige. Adorned in MANUFAKTUR Opalite White Bright exterior colour (a R29 700 option) with 21-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels (R65 500), its commanding presence turned even the most introverted bystanders into eager conversationalists. For many, this was their first encounter with the rare beast.
Performance
The heart of the S 63 E-Performance is a meticulously engineered hybrid system that pairs a 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine with an AMG-specific electric drivetrain. With a combined output of 590 kW and an astonishing 1 430 Nm of torque, this luxury sedan accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, with an optional top speed of 290 km/h. Despite its size, it delivers supercar-level performance, all while offering an all-electric range of 33 km for urban commutes.
Built at Mercedes-Benz’s futuristic Factory 56 in Sindelfingen, Germany, the S 63 E-Performance shares its production line with the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the electric EQS models, underscoring its place among the finest vehicles the brand has ever produced.
Behind the Wheel
Driving the S 63 E-Performance is an experience like no other. In Sport+ mode, the signature AMG growl fills the cabin, making every journey thrilling. Meanwhile, the hybrid system charges seamlessly for urban electric driving when needed. Switch to Comfort mode, and the car transforms into a serene cocoon of luxury, rivalling the plush ride of a Mercedes-Maybach.
Inside, the car is a technological marvel. From the Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos to the digital light with projection functions, every detail has been meticulously crafted to enhance the driving experience. My test unit featured nearly R549 700 worth of options, including rear climate control, active multi-contour seats, Rear Seat Comfort Package, MBUX rear tablet, AMG Night Package, AMG Exclusive Package, 3D driver’s display, USB Package Plus, Heat-insulating dark-tinted glass, AMG Driver’s Package and an AMG high-performance ceramic composite braking system.
A Few Observations
While the rear seats offer ample space and comfort, I did miss the extravagance of BMW’s Theatre Screen in the 7 Series, which transforms the back seat into a private cinema. For a car of this calibre, rear entertainment screens would have been a welcome addition.
Is It Worth the Price?
The S 63 E-Performance is a car that defies easy categorisation. If sheer opulence is your priority, the Mercedes-Maybach S680 may be a better fit. However, for those seeking a blend of raw power and unparalleled luxury, this AMG masterpiece is unmatched.
As the automotive industry pivots toward electric vehicles, the S 63 E-Performance could well be one of the last V8-powered hybrid sedans of its kind — a true collector’s item. If you’re considering alternatives, the Bentley Flying Spur Speed Hybrid (from R6 130 000) or the BMW M760e Plug-In Hybrid (starting at R3 090 000) are worth exploring.
Ultimately, the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-Performance is more than a car — it’s an experience, a status symbol and a glimpse into the future of luxury performance. If you can afford it, this is one investment that will pay dividends in every mile driven.
