Leapmotor C10: Electric SUV, Extended Freedom

From sleek design to whisper-quiet performance, the Range-Extended Electric SUV sets a new benchmark for accessible electric mobility in South Africa.

There’s a quiet revolution humming from the East, and it’s growing louder on South African roads. The arrival of the Leapmotor C10 Range Extender Electric Vehicle (REEV) in Cape Town marks another chapter in Asia’s bold pursuit of redefining mobility and luxury.

Managed by Stellantis South Africa, Leapmotor enters our market with confidence — not as a curiosity, but as a credible contender. The C10 REEV isn’t here to whisper; it’s here to challenge preconceptions, blending the silence of electric motoring with the reassurance of extended range — all wrapped in an unexpectedly elegant design.

Design and Presence

From the first glance, the C10 exudes European sophistication. Its sleek silhouette and taut proportions could easily be mistaken for a baby Porsche Cayenne. The launch car, dressed in a striking green hue with a brown interior and perched on 20-inch alloys, makes a quietly assertive statement: refinement doesn’t have to wear a badge from Stuttgart, Munich, or Coventry.

Power of Silence

Underneath its sculpted shell lies a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 158kW and 320Nm — whisper-quiet yet potent. The 1.5-litre petrol engine doesn’t drive the wheels; it simply acts as a generator to feed the battery, erasing the anxiety of finding a charger in the middle of nowhere. Drivers can achieve up to 145km on pure electric power, with a combined range of 970km, comfortably covering long weekends or business trips.

That’s right up the alley of the Omoda C9 PHEV’s sibling, the JAECOO J7 SHS, which offers over 1 100km of range. Stellantis South Africa, however, prefers to see the Leapmotor C10 REEV competing directly with the Haval H6 GT PHEV and the Tesla-like BYD Sealion 6, positioning it firmly in the heart of South Africa’s new-energy SUV battlefield.

Inside the Sanctuary

Step inside, and the C10 greets you with minimalist calm. The cabin is anchored by a 14.6-inch central touchscreen, reminiscent of the Volvo EX30’s clean Scandinavian simplicity. The clutter-free space is softened by premium materials and subtle design cues that balance functionality with serenity.

Safety and innovation are also front-of-mind: seven airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane-centring, and a driver-monitoring camera system remind drivers that Leapmotor’s approach isn’t only digital — it’s human-centric.

The Drive

The media launch route through Franschhoek Pass and Helshoogte Pass showcased more than the C10’s handling; it was a celebration of sustainable travel. From the Klipheuwel Wind Farm to the Eskom Hydropower Station in Grabouw and finally the solar-powered Cavalli Estate in Stellenbosch, the journey symbolised the synergy between nature and technology.

On the road, the C10 felt composed and eager — its electric drive delivering instant torque and smooth acceleration. Road manners were commendable through the Cape’s sweeping bends, though a touch of wind noise on the front doors hinted that pre-production finesse is probably still being perfected.

Verdict: The New Contender

As Stellantis prepares to introduce an all-wheel-drive variant in early 2026, the Leapmotor C10 stands out as a compelling proposition for those seeking the refinement of electric mobility without infrastructure anxiety.

Priced at R759 900 (Style) and R799 900 (Design) with a 5-year/100 000km warranty and service plan, it offers premium motoring at an accessible entry point.

In a market where badges once dictated status, the Leapmotor C10 REEV reminds us that true luxury is now measured by innovation, efficiency, and quiet confidence. The East isn’t just arriving; it’s evolving luxury on its own terms.
