Driven: Updated Audi Q7 and Q8

With sharper aesthetics and powerful engines, the duo from Ingolstadt is setting new standards in South Africa’s premium SUV market.

In the world of premium SUVs, presence matters. It’s not just about performance, but about making an entrance – commanding attention through design, technology and an uncompromising pursuit of excellence. Audi South Africa (Audi SA) understands this well, which is why the brand has refreshed its flagship Q7 and Q8 models, infusing them with even sharper aesthetics, innovative technology and an unmistakable air of prestige.

To experience these updates firsthand, Audi SA invited me to the national media launch of their upgraded SUV range: the Q7 55 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic, SQ7 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic, Q8 45 TDI Quattro Tiptronic, Q8 55 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic, SQ8 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic, and the formidable RS Q8 Performance – Audi’s most powerful combustion vehicle to date. Though my time behind the wheel was limited to the SQ7 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic and SQ8 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic, the promise of experiencing the RS Q8 Performance in the coming weeks adds another layer of excitement to an already thrilling adventure.

A Grand Beginning in Cape Town

The journey began at Cape Town International Airport, unfolding against the backdrop of the city’s majestic landscapes. Our first destination: Bertus Basson’s Chorus Restaurant at the stunning Waterkloof Wine Farm in Somerset West. It was here that Sascha Sauer, Head of Audi SA, and his executive team set the stage for what lies ahead, offering insights into Audi’s ambitions in South Africa’s fiercely competitive luxury car segment.

And those ambitions are not to be taken lightly. In 2024, Audi SA climbed to second place in the premium vehicle sector, overtaking Mercedes-Benz South Africa, with BMW SA still holding onto the top spot. But with an aggressive new product offensive – including the arrival of the S3, RS3, A5 Sedan and Avant, A6 Avant e-tron, Q6 e-tron, Q3 and Q5 – Audi is poised not only to maintain its position but to take on the leader. “We will be launching the latest models with the latest technologies while adjusting our product portfolio to meet evolving customer expectations,” Sauer confidently shared.

The Thrill of the Drive: SQ7 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic

After a sumptuous lunch, I took the wheel of the SQ7 TFSI quattro Tiptronic – draped in Daytona Grey Pearl Metallic and sitting on 22-inch Audi Sport multi-spoke S design wheels. This was more than just a test drive; it was a dynamic exploration of power, poise and refinement as I navigated through Sir Lowry’s Pass, Grabouw, and the picturesque Franschhoek Pass, eventually arriving for the night at Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa by Dream Resorts.

Beneath the hood, the 4.0-litre TFSI engine roars with 373kW of power and 770Nm of torque, propelling the SQ7 from 0-100km/h in just 4.1 seconds. The deep, resonant soundtrack of its V8 engine is a statement in itself – an orchestra of power, precision and adrenaline-pumping excitement. Audi is making it abundantly clear that this SUV is built to rival the BMW X5 M60i and X7 M60i, and from my experience, the SQ7 delivers in both performance and composure.

While its interior remains sophisticated and tech-forward, there are hints that the Q7’s overall design is beginning to show its age. I believe that by 2027, we can expect an all-new generation that will likely push the boundaries even further.

Redefining Luxury: The Q7 and Q8 Experience

Versatility is at the heart of the Audi Q7 – a model designed for those who demand both opulence and practicality. With a seven-passenger capacity, an expansive luggage compartment (up to 1,993 litres), and HD Matrix LED headlights with laser high beams, it’s a fusion of sophistication and innovative technology. All-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension, and quattro all-wheel drive ensure that every journey is as smooth as it is exhilarating.

Meanwhile, the Audi Q8 is the epitome of sporty elegance, with its coupe-like silhouette and tailored luxury designed for those who desire a statement piece rather than just a vehicle. On the second day of the launch, I switched gears and took control of the SQ8 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic, finished in Chili Red Metallic and sitting on 21-inch 5-twin spoke module rims.

This is where the BMW X6 M60i and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe 53 4MATIC meet their match. The SQ8’s cabin is both refined and intuitive, with an enhanced seating experience that prioritises comfort – particularly in the rear, where Audi has managed to strike a balance between luxury and functionality.

The Ultimate Showdown: Q7 or Q8?

Choosing between the Q7 and Q8 is like choosing between two distinct personalities – one practical and commanding, the other sophisticated and daring. The Q7, with its seven-seat configuration, is an excellent choice for those who prioritise family-friendly luxury. The Q8, on the other hand, is tailored for individuals who seek dynamic styling and an engaging drive.

For me? The Q8 takes the crown – its sporty allure, effortless performance and elegant design make it an undeniable standout. And with the RS Q8 Performance test drive still to come, there’s an even greater thrill on the horizon.

Final Thoughts: A Testament to Audi’s Unyielding Excellence

With the launch of the updated Q7 and Q8, Audi South Africa is making a bold statement: luxury is not just about status – it’s about innovation, performance and an unrelenting commitment to excellence. These SUVs are not merely vehicles; they are experiences, designed for those who appreciate the finer things in life and demand nothing less than perfection.

As I anticipate my encounter with the RS Q8 Performance, one thing remains clear: Audi is not just refining its SUVs – it’s redefining what it means to drive in luxury.
