Illuminated in a symbolic shade of green, Table Mountain stood proudly over Cape Town as VIP guests joined HRH Prince William and prominent celebrities, innovators, and activists at the fourth annual Earthshot Prize Awards, held for the first time on African soil.
Founded in 2020 by Prince William, the Earthshot Prize is a global search for innovators with solution-driven initiatives aimed at ensuring a thriving natural world by 2030. Dubbed the “Oscars for the Environment,” the awards show capped an inspiring week of events, panel discussions, and youth development initiatives. From thousands of global entries, 15 finalists were chosen, and five winners were each awarded £1 million to scale their impactful solutions. For the full list of winners, two of whom represent Africa, visit www.earthshotprize.org.
Held in an eco-friendly venue purpose-built for the ceremony, presenters included supermodels Heidi Klum and Winnie Harlow, actors and activists Nina Dobrev and Tobe Nwigwe, and environmental activist Robert Irwin. The show was hosted by award-winning actor and singer Billy Porter, television presenter Bonang Matheba, and South African actress and Earthshot Global Ambassador, Nomzamo Mbatha, who wore a showstopping sustainable dress.
An electric energy filled the room as guests enjoyed performances by the Ndlovu Youth Choir, Lebo M, and Uncle Waffles. Prince William, wearing a vintage jacket, sustainable trainers by Purified Shoes, and a Swiftie-style bracelet made by his daughter Princess Charlotte, opened and closed his keynote address with phrases in nine African languages.
The YourLuxury Africa team attended VIP events and the Awards, supporting local designers in Hugo Flear, The Cape Cobra Leather Craft, Dollhouse by Tamryn Walker, Charles Greig Jewellers, and Kirsten Goss. Gina Din, the author of Daughter of Africa and one of Africa’s most influential women, wore a cherished Parsee Gara, while YLA’s managing editor, Lerato Tshabalala, stunned in Rubicon Clothing.
Coinciding with Earthshot Week, YourLuxury Africa’s sustainable issue is out now.
