A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of spending time with something genuinely special: the Land Rover Defender Octa Edition One, courtesy of Jaguar Land Rover South Africa’s PR division. From the moment it appears, the Octa signals intent. This is not merely another iteration of an icon; it is the definitive expression of the Defender philosophy — distilled, intensified and elevated.
If cars convened in boardrooms, the Defender Octa would not be another executive around the table. It would be the Chairperson of the Board. The reason is simple: this is the most powerful Defender ever made, engineered not for comfort zones, but for extremes. Like a diamond, the New Defender Octa is a rare fusion of toughness and luxury. Its name draws inspiration from the octahedral form of the hardest and most desirable mineral on earth, which also influences its distinctive identity: strong, resilient, rare and unmistakably flagship.
V8 and Octa Mode
Under the bonnet lives a twin-turbocharged V8 producing 467kW of power and 750Nm of torque, propelling this commanding SUV from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.0 seconds. These figures are not shouted; they are quietly authoritative.
At the base of the steering wheel sits an encircled, diamond-shaped button: the Octa Mode. Engage it, and the Defender reveals its alter ego, shedding refinement for raw intent. Throttle response sharpens, the chassis stiffens, and the vehicle adopts a more assertive stance, ready to dominate challenging terrain. Octa Mode also enables Off-Road Launch for optimum acceleration on loose surfaces, alongside bespoke ABS calibration when traction control is relaxed — ensuring decisive braking even when conditions deteriorate.
Visually, the Octa Edition One is bolder and tougher than any Defender before it. My test car was finished in Charente Grey, wrapped in a matte protective film and riding on imposing 22-inch Style 7026 black gloss wheels. The ride height is raised, the track widened, and the wheel arches extended, lending it an unmistakable presence. Redesigned bumpers improve approach and departure angles, while robust underbody protection inspires confidence to venture further off the beaten path. It will also wade through up to one metre of water — deeper than any production Defender to date. This is a vehicle that reassures you that even when the road ends, control does not.
Purpose Meets Luxury Inside
Inside, the Defender Octa strikes a careful balance between purpose and luxury. Curated material selections set it apart, including exceptionally durable Ultrafabrics PU — 30 per cent lighter than traditional leather — finished in a distinctive duo-tone Khaki and Ebony. The aesthetic is modern and technical, yet tactile and inviting.
Up front, all-new Performance Seats provide enhanced lateral support with integrated headrests. Meanwhile, Land Rover’s Body and Soul Seat audio technology immerses occupants in sound and sensation — a feature I previously encountered in the Range Rover Sport SV Edition Two, and one that subtly reinforces the Defender’s premium positioning.
Calm Confidence, On and Off Road
Driving the Defender Octa is a reminder that true leadership isn’t loud. I spent time with it on the gravel roads of secluded farms around Muldersdrift, Gauteng, where it felt composed, assured and unflustered — even as surfaces turned hostile. It moves with calm confidence, absorbing punishment without drama.
Unsurprisingly, the Defender Octa also forms the basis of Land Rover’s Dakar and FIA World Rally Raid Championship challenger, showcasing its credentials in the world’s toughest off-road arenas. Legendary rally driver Stéphane Peterhansel is among those currently piloting the Defender at the 2026 Dakar Rally — a fitting endorsement of its extreme capability.
The inevitable question follows: is it better than the Mercedes-AMG G63? The honest answer is that it depends on what you value. The Defender Octa represents modern dominance — technical, purposeful, and immensely capable. The G63 remains a symbol of swagger and heritage, complete with an unmistakable German growl that tugs at the heartstrings. Personally, emotion might lead me toward the Germans for their attitude and theatre. However, for those who prioritise subtle authority, extreme adventure and unshakeable composure in the harshest environments, the Defender Octa is the truer expression of leadership.
Pricing for the Land Rover Defender Octa Edition One starts from R3 663 600and, with additional accessories, can comfortably climb beyond R4 million. It is a significant investment, but one that delivers something increasingly rare in the luxury SUV space: authenticity, presence, power, and purpose.
