It’s also what the 115-year-old Alfa Romeo brand embodies as it steps confidently into a new era with the Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica.
At the recent media launch in the west of Johannesburg, the day unfolded like a love letter to la dolce vita. Hosted at Avianto, a venue synonymous with romance and refinement, the event was steeped in Italian flair.
Even the midway refreshment stop near Hartbeespoort exuded Italian charm, from the delicacies served to the conversations shared.
The finale? A surprise return to Avianto for an exquisite lunch prepared by acclaimed chef Fortunato Mazzone, the culinary maestro behind Forti Grill & Bar in Menlyn, Pretoria. As guests savoured his dishes, soprano Bongi Madlala Musa and her tenor husband Lehlohonolo Musa filled the air with Pavarotti’s timeless arias. It was Italy in full song – passion, performance, and perfection harmonised in a single day.
Elettrica – Electric Power Meets Alfa Spirit
Available in two derivatives, Elettrica and Elettrica Veloce, the new Junior redefines compact luxury through electric power.
The base model delivers 118kW of power and 260Nm of torque, reaching 100km/h in 9 seconds with a range of 410km.
The sportier Veloce offers 207kW and 345Nm, sprinting from 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds and achieving a top speed of 200km/h – spirited performance paired with unmistakable Alfa charisma.

Interior Elegance and Smart Tech
Step inside and the Junior’s cabin feels unapologetically driver-centric. Every detail, from the sculpted dashboard to the tactile finishes, whispers “crafted in Italy”.
A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, deliver seamless connectivity wrapped in elegance.
Globally, the Junior has already captured hearts, with over 22 000 orders and an impressive 21 per cent of them being fully electric (BEV) models. After successful debuts in Europe and the Middle East, the Junior now graces South African roads, with Japan and Australia next in line.
On the Road: Agility and Emotion
On the road, the Junior’s personality shines. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup delivers playful agility, though an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant would undoubtedly heighten its dynamic appeal. For drivers accustomed to AWD or rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the FWD might feel slightly less engaging.
That said, the Junior is perfectly tuned for young professionals and stylish retirees seeking an expressive, eco-forward companion for city life. The ride is composed and comfortable.
Aesthetically, it shines in Red Brera Bicolore or White Sempione Bicolore, which accentuate its sculpted lines beautifully.
While Alfa Romeo positions the Junior against the Volvo EX30, MINI’s Aceman and Countryman EV will also have their eyes on this spirited newcomer. Yet Alfa’s allure lies in emotion, the kind that makes your pulse race before you even touch the start button.
Time will tell if the Junior can unsettle its Scandinavian and British rivals. But if first impressions count, this little Italian has already made a grand entrance. It will take more extended time behind the wheel, however, to convince me to completely disregard the Volvo EX30.
