Once a symbol of intellect and refinement, the pocket watch is one of horology’s purest expressions of art and ingenuity. Linked to the evolution of fine watchmaking, few maisons embody this lineage more profoundly than Vacheron Constantin.
Celebrating its 270th anniversary this year, the maison’s early pocket watches were prized for their precision and aesthetics. By the mid-19th century, its pocket chronometers were winning acclaim for accuracy, while the early 20th century heralded an age of grand complications.
Notable masterpieces include James Ward Packard’s 1918 pocket watch featuring a chronograph and chiming mechanism set in an elaborately chased 20kt gold case, as well as the Grand Complication watches for Egypt’s King Fuad and King Farouk I.
Even as lifestyles shifted towards wristwatches, Vacheron Constantin continued to honour this heritage. The maison’s Les Cabinotiers division has created record-breaking pieces such as the Reference 57260 (2015), with 57 complications including the first Hebraic perpetual calendar, and the 2024 Berkley Grand Complication, which surpassed it with 63, featuring a Chinese perpetual calendar.
Collectors’ Standards
Patek Philippe’s annual Rare Handcrafts exhibition in Geneva showcases collectable pocket watches, highlighting rare crafts such as cloisonné enamel, grisaille, and miniature painting.
A standout example is the 992/160G-001 Rialto Bridge, which captures 18th-century Venice in luminous enamel inspired by Canaletto’s brushwork. Every wavelet and façade was engraved and fired up to 17 times at over 800°C. Housed in white gold, the watch rests on a hand-sculpted stand and is powered by the hand-wound Calibre 17’’’ LEP PS.
Innovation in Form
Hublot’s collaboration with contemporary artist Daniel Arsham redefines the pocket watch as a sculptural object of the future. Limited to 99 pieces, the Arsham Droplet is presented in a titanium case and framed by Arsham Green rubber bumpers and twin teardrop-shaped crystals.
Measuring 73.2mm by 52.6mm, its openworked form reveals the HUB1201 Meca-10 manufacture movement with a 10-day power reserve, while Hublot’s double “one-click” chain mechanism transforms the piece from pocket watch to pendant or table clock. It is water-resistant to 30 metres.
Reinventing Artistry
Louis Vuitton returns to its Parisian roots with Escale au Pont-Neuf, a one-of-a-kind pocket watch featuring automata, a minute repeater and exceptional métiers d’art mastery.
Depicting an autumn day on the Seine, the dial reveals the Pont-Neuf, Samaritaine and the Maison’s historic headquarters through seven animations and 13 moving elements sculpted in gold and hand-enamelled at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. These are powered by the manual-winding Calibre LFT AU14.03, the House’s most complex movement.
Framed by an engraved case set with 60 baguette-cut gems, the piece took two-and-a-half years and over 1 000 hours of labour to complete. It was a finalist in the Mechanical Exception category at the 2025 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève(GPHG) Awards.
The pocket watch remains an enduring symbol of horological artistry and innovation, with today’s leading watchmakers continuing to elevate precision craft, technical mastery, and imaginative design.
