The start of July saw the fourth iteration of Aero Expo Southern Africa kick off at Wonderboom National Airport in Tshwane, South Africa. Organised by renowned trade fair organisers Messe Frankfurt, this premier business-to-business trade show for the aviation industry featured over 100 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations, products, accessories, parts, finance and insurance offerings in aviation.
As a representative of YourLuxury Africa, I had the privilege of attending this year’s show, courtesy of Messe Frankfurt. It was an opportunity to marvel at everything from private jets and helicopters to sport and leisure aircraft.
Among these marvels, the Pipistrel Velis Electro stood out, a groundbreaking electric aeroplane that is commercially viable and fully approved for pilot training and other operations. Managed and distributed by Absolute Aviation in South Africa, the Pipistrel Velis Electro is a two-seater and one of the world’s first electric aeroplanes to receive a Type Certificate (EASA.A.573 TCDS). Primarily intended for pilot training, it operates at an astonishingly low noise level of just 60 dBA and produces zero emissions. Its revolutionary liquid-cooled powertrain ensures reliability and efficiency, making it capable of operating in various weather conditions.
Powered by Pipistrel’s certified electric engine, the E-811, it delivers 57.6kW and offers a maximum cruising speed of 98 knots with a flying range of 50 minutes. It can fly to a maximum altitude of 12 000 ft. This environmentally friendly aircraft, costing R4 060 000, truly represents the future of aviation.
Something for air-sport enthusiasts
Air Sport Aviation in South Africa showcased some air thrillers for air-sport enthusiasts, the VL3 Evolution 915is and VL3 914 turbo. The VL3 Evolution aircraft boasts a full carbon composite design with a Kevlar-reinforced cockpit, advanced avionics, and luxurious interiors. With a range of 2 000 km and a top speed of 370 km/h, it’s perfect for both crosscountry flights to Namibia, Botswana or Okavango and local leisure trips to the likes of Kruger National Park, Western Cape, KZN or around your local field. Its impressive shortfield landing capability and high climb rate make it a versatile choice for pilots. Prices range from R4 100 000 for a preowned VL3 914 turbo model to R6 000 000 for a new VLE 916is.
Crafting Excellence in the Skies
Among other standout exhibits at Aero SA was the Sling 2 semi-monocoque aircraft and Sling TSI, a testament to the ingenuity of South African aircraft designer and producer Sling Aircraft. The sleek Sling 2 marvel is crafted with aviation-grade aluminium, precision-punched using CNC machines, ensuring impeccable standards and rugged durability. The Sling 2’s striking aluminium lines are paired with cutting-edge technological advances, resulting in an aircraft that not only looks stunning but also delivers an exceptional flying experience.
Powered by the robust Rotax 912 engine, the Sling 2 offers two variants: the 912 ULS and the 912 iS. The 100 hp (75kW) Rotax 912 ULS boasts a remarkable time between overhauls of 2,000 hours, offering the best power-to-weight ratio in its class, according to Sling Aircraft. The Rotax 912 iS enhances the renowned advantages of the Rotax 4-stroke engine series with additional features designed to elevate both the flying and ownership experience. Equipped with a Warp Drive 3 Blade Ground Adjustable propeller, the Sling 2 allows for pitch adjustments on the ground to optimise performance based on current payload and flying conditions. This versatility, combined with its superior engineering, makes the Sling 2 a top choice for pilots seeking a blend of reliability, efficiency and impressive design. On the other hand, the Sling TSi is powered by a 160 hp Rotax turbocharged and FADEC 916 iS engine. Based on the proven concept of the Rotax 915 iS engine, the 916 offers increased power, the best power-to-weight ratio in its class, full take-off power up to 15,000 feet (4,572 m) and a service ceiling of 23,000 feet (7,010 m) which can all be attributed to the turbocharged engine. In addition, Sling now offer MT hydraulic Propellers as a standard.
Starting price for the two-seater Sling 2 is R3,000,000 and R4,500,00 for the four-seater Sling TSi.
