South Africa’s Top 3 International Travel Picks for 2025 Revealed

Domestic destinations still top the list for South African travellers, but three international hotspots are quickly climbing the ranks. Here’s what makes them popular.

South Africa is famously one of the world’s most diverse and sought-after travel destinations, so it comes as no surprise that even locals are choosing to explore domestically during their holidays. According to travel agency Flight Centre’s hotel booking data from January to March 2025, South African travellers are prioritising local destinations, with domestic travel leading the pack.

Local travel trends aside, Flight Centre also revealed South Africans’ top three international go-tos, with Thailand emerging as the most popular choice, enticing travellers with its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and renowned cuisine. Nearby Mauritius, with its idyllic islands and luxurious resorts, takes the second spot, while the United Arab Emirates, particularly Dubai, ranks third, drawing South Africans with its blend of modernity, shopping, and entertainment.

Here’s what you need to know about South Africans’ favourite three travel destinations…

THAILAND

Loved for: Affordable shopping, city escapes, idyllic islands and rich culture.

Thailand’s captivating appeal for South African travellers stems from its exotic blend of cultural richness and breathtaking landscapes, all presented at an attractive price point. Vibrant street markets, delectable cuisine, and welcoming hospitality add to its irresistible charm. Pristine beaches of Phuket and Koh Samui are some of the world’s finest, while Bangkok and Chiang Mai offer more immersive cultural experiences. The favourable exchange rate further enhances the affordability, making accommodation, luxury shopping and experiences more accessible. Did we mention its convenience? Thailand’s well-developed travel and tourism infrastructure ensures a seamless and enjoyable journey from start to finish.

MAURITIUS

Loved for: Picture-perfect beaches in a relaxing tropical island environment.

Mauritius is a picture-perfect destination that offers South African travellers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and exotic adventures just a few hours away. With its pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, and lush landscapes, the island is the definition of relaxation. The vibrant local cuisine, influenced by Indian, French, and Creole flavours, adds a delightful culinary experience. Cultural attractions, from colourful markets to historical sites, offer insight into the island’s diverse heritage. Whether it’s engaging in water sports, exploring nature trails, or simply relaxing in luxurious resorts, Mauritius has always been a paradise for South African travellers, and its allure remains stronger than ever.

UAE

Loved for: Luxury shopping, fine dining and travel experiences.

Home to the tallest building in the world, the deepest diving pool, the largest mall, and one of the most complete dinosaur skeletons, Dubai is no longer merely a layover destination; it is swiftly becoming a must-visit locale in its own right. According to the latest MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index (GDCI), it ranks as the fourth most visited city globally, following Bangkok, London, and Paris, and is increasingly appealing to South African travellers as well. While South Africa is known for its beloved braai culture, Dubai makes a striking impression with its extravagant brunch scene. Typically held in lively beach clubs and restaurants across the city, these all-you-can-eat brunches draw a diverse crowd of expats and tourists. For those wary of the heat, the ideal time to visit is from November to March (winter), although the city is well-equipped with indoor air conditioning throughout the year.

Visa requirements for South Africans:

South Africans need an Entry Visit Visa to enter the UAE. The UAE Tourist eVisa is an electronic travel authorisation that permits South African travellers to visit the UAE for short-term tourism purposes. It’s valid for a single entry and allows a stay of up to 30 days.

Flight time from South Africa:

Multiple airlines provide flights between South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, including Emirates, South African Airways, and Etihad Airways, all of which offer non-stop routes, with direct flights taking approximately 8 hours.
