Linda Friedman of Custom Safaris begins every trip with a long-form conversation. “We don’t do typical tourist visits to a village,” she explains. “It’s about understanding the client first.”
She once arranged for a family to fly by helicopter into a remote northern Kenyan village she has supported since 1995. This is just one example of an experience that was exclusive and highly personal.
Similarly, Mark Bland of Satori Africa combines luxury with off-grid expertise through their expedition company, Routes Rediscovered. “We’re constantly on the road ourselves,” he says. “That’s how we find the people and places that AI or algorithms can’t.”

“It’s about expectation management,” says Bland. “You want clients to be comfortable, yes, but you also need to prepare them for the unpolished, human reality of cultural encounters.”
One experience he curated involved an African wellness immersion that combined Ayurvedic treatments with time spent with a sangoma, exploration of San spirituality, and indigenous plant healing.

She recently helped plan a marriage blessing in the Serengeti – an intimate fusion of the South African bride’s heritage with indigenous rituals and community celebrations. The locals both observed and participated.
