Melrose Arch, a mixed-use precinct in Johannesburg, is leading the way in sustainability with innovative eco-friendly practices. Since its development began in 1998, the precinct has grown to include offices, retail spaces, hotels, and residential areas, all integrated with green initiatives.

Waste Management and Recycling

Melrose Arch waste sorting team

Melrose Arch operates a 24/7 waste separation facility that recycles paper, cardboard, metals, plastics, and glass. Food waste from the precinct’s 30 restaurants is sent to a recycling centre, where it’s turned into organic fertiliser. In February 2024, 88 per cent of the precinct’s waste was recycled, saving significant amounts of CO2, water, and energy.

Cooling System

The precinct features an underground cooling plant that provides energy-efficient climate control for its buildings. The plant, which operates 24/7, uses a closed water distribution network to regulate temperatures across the area.

Solar Energy

Melrose Arch has a rooftop solar system with 7 811 panels, generating about 3.2MW of clean energy annually. The precinct plans to expand its solar capacity by an additional 3MW and is exploring battery storage solutions to provide backup power during outages.

Water Conservation

The precinct has two underground water sources and a treatment plant that converts water into potable water. This system, along with backup tanks, ensures a continuous water supply, saving millions of litres annually and keeping the precinct’s gardens green year-round.

Melrose Arch’s commitment to sustainability, from waste recycling to solar energy and water conservation, sets a high standard for environmental responsibility in South Africa.
