This summer, the Brücke Museum in Berlin pays homage to the extraordinary life and work of Irma Stern with Irma Stern: A Modern Artist between Berlin and Cape Town, a groundbreaking exhibition running from 13 July to 2 November 2025.
Showcasing over 40 paintings, watercolours, and drawings, many drawn from South African collections, the exhibition positions Irma’s bold, expressive oeuvre in conversation with the revolutionary artists of Germany’s Brücke movement. Curated by Lisa Hörstmann and Lisa Marei Schmidt, this marks the first major museum retrospective dedicated to the South African modernist in Berlin.
