The FNB Art Joburg fair is to be transformed by the unveiling of Africa Re-Union, a landmark artistic initiative. More than an artwork, it is a profound act of reclamation, a stage where art becomes manifesto, and where collective memory ignites a movement. It directly subverts the 1884 Berlin Conference, reclaiming Africa as the author of its own destiny.
Conceived by pan-African thinker Thebe Ikalafeng and realised by artist Mark Modimola, the monumental 3m x 2m canvas achieves a powerful inversion. Employing the Equal Earth projection, it restores Africa’s true scale and dignity, rendered without borders that correct centuries of cartographic distortion.
At its heart stands a round table — a symbol of equity. Seated around it are defining voices of Africa’s past and future: from Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and youth activist Zulaikha Patel. They are joined by revolutionary thinkers, artists like Miriam Makeba, and voices from the diaspora.
Yet, one chair remains intentionally empty. It is a call to action, belonging to the unborn child, the enduring ancestor, and every African today who must take their rightful place at the table of history. It is not an absence; it is an invitation.
In a symbolic act, the original canvas will not be sold. Thebe has gifted it to the UNISA Art Gallery, ensuring it is preserved as a covenant, not a commodity. Only 2 063 limited editions will be released, echoing the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
“This is the setting of our own table — equal, sovereign, and unapologetically African. No one will define us but us,” says Thebe.
Its unveiling at the FNB Art Joburg fair took the form of a live performance, re-imagining the 1884 conference with African agency at its centre. Arriving as the continent prepares to host its inaugural G20 Summit, Africa Re-Union is a cultural milestone in Africa’s rising global voice.
