While most celebrated SUV nameplates have evolved drastically from their spartan origins to modern, ultra-luxurious symbols of wealth and status, the Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen, or the G-Class, stands out for its remarkable consistency over the course of almost four decades. The G-Class has retained its iconic design from the 1970s, remaining largely unchanged despite last year’s long-awaited reboot. And the performance flagship Mercedes-AMG G 63 has rightfully earned its place as an automotive legend, showcasing its exceptional prowess through its robust drivetrain, AMG-tuned suspension, and AMG-specific driving programmes. Furthermore, despite its rather elementary and angular lines, its interior exudes exclusivity with a wealth of luxurious features and meticulous craftsmanship, establishing it as a spirited SUV.
Now, the German automaker has announced the Mercedes-AMG G 63 ‘Grand Edition,’ a remarkable off-road vehicle that pays tribute to its pre-eminent status in the brand’s model range. This exclusive model, limited to just 1,000 units worldwide, boasts a striking Manufaktur Night Black Magno exterior, adorned with gold accents that accentuate the design elements that link it to the original G model from 1979.
The ‘Grand Edition’ presents the AMG logo and the Mercedes star in ‘Kalahari Gold Magno’ colour, which also extends to the inlays in the front and rear bumpers, the front optical underride protection, the spare wheel inlay featuring the Mercedes star, and the spare wheel ring. The distinctive special model rolls on 22-inch AMG forged wheels with an eye-catching cross-spoke design in Tech Gold, complemented by a matte black central locking nut and a Tech Gold Mercedes star. The side graphics of the ‘Grand Edition’ also sport the Tech Gold tone.
The special SUV’s interior also features an enticing combination of black and gold accents. Upon entering the vehicle are welcomed by illuminated ‘AMG’ emblems adorning the sleek black door sill trims. The seats are crafted in G Manufaktur black nappa leather, accentuated by gold stitching, golden AMG logo and gold edging. The black floor mats are decorated with gold stitching, while the trim piece in the passenger-side grab handle inlay boasts carbon with copper thread, accentuated by a ‘Grand Edition’ badge. Carbon with copper thread is also used for other trim parts within the interior. The microfibre AMG Performance steering wheel features a steering wheel clasp adorned with a G 63 plaque, adding a final touch of exclusivity.
As a bonus, the vehicle comes with a customised AMG Indoor Car Cover, designed to safeguard the SUV from dust and scratches in the garage. The cover boasts a breathable outer layer crafted from tear-resistant synthetic fibre fabric, and an anti-static flannel fabric lining, ensuring optimal protection.
