Since the RX Hybrid arrived in 2008, the marque has refined the art of blending combustion and electric power into a seamless luxury experience. Our journey began at Cape Town International Airport, where a fleet of RZ models awaited beneath the summer morning sky. At first glance, the evolved spindle body design announces a new era. The familiar shark-like nose remains, sculpted and modernised for the electric age, while the full-width rear light signature lends the RZ a striking presence. It is unmistakably Lexus, yet undeniably forward-looking.
Inside, the cabin is guided by Lexus’ Tazuna philosophy: a human-centred design that intuitively connects the driver and the machine. Controls fall naturally to hand. Ambient lighting glows softly against layered textures. In the 550e F SPORT, a futuristic yoke steering wheel — reminiscent of aviation controls — transforms the act of driving into something theatrical yet precise.
Our first 30 kilometres led us through Constantia’s vineyard-lined roads to Beyond Restaurant at Buitenverwachting, where Lexus SA unpacked the philosophy behind the RZ over a seven-course celebration of provenance. Rare-breed meats, heirloom vegetables, and artisan cheeses echoed the vehicle’s own ethos: craftsmanship, authenticity, and respect for detail.
Power on the Road
Back behind the wheel, Chapman’s Peak Drive provided the perfect canvas. The RZ 500e delivers 280kW of near-silent power, while the 550e F SPORT raises output to 300kW. Acceleration is immediate yet composed, the cabin whisper-quiet even against Atlantic crosswinds. With a claimed range of up to 450km and advanced battery cooling suited to South African conditions, the RZ feels engineered for both urban elegance and long-distance escape.
Our evening concluded at The Cole by Kove Collection in Sea Point — Cape Town’s newest boutique hotel address — where understated design and ocean-kissed views set the tone for the next chapter of the experience. Dinner at Figo restaurant on the eighth floor was a fitting crescendo: refined Mediterranean-inspired plates, beautifully presented and thoughtfully paired, served against panoramic city and Atlantic vistas. It was an atmosphere of effortless sophistication — a reminder that true luxury is often quiet, considered, and deeply sensory.
Priced from R1 649 400 for the RZ 500e EX, R1 823 800 for the RZ 500e SE, and R1 938 600 for the RZ 550e F SPORT, the Lexus RZ is more than a new model — it is a declaration. A confident step beyond hybrid familiarity into a fully electric future, ready to challenge the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz GLC EV, and Audi e-tron SUV when they arrive later this year — all without surrendering serenity, craftsmanship, or soul.

All derivatives include a seven-year/105 000km maintenance plan and vehicle warranty, with service intervals set at 12 months or 15 000km. The EV battery is covered for eight years or 160 000km.
