BMW iX1: Leading the Charge in Compact Electric Luxury

By Edward Moleke Makwana

BMW South Africa (BMW SA) has long been a trailblazer in the premium electric vehicle (EV) space, consistently pushing the boundaries of luxury and innovation. With the introduction of the BMW iX1, the brand’s latest foray into the electrified sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment – or Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment as the Bavarian brand’s preferred reference, BMW is once again setting new benchmarks. As the competition intensifies with the influx of new EV models, BMW’s steadfast commitment to electrification remains unwavering. I recently had the privilege of experiencing the BMW iX1 xDrive30e, courtesy of BMW SA’s media fleet. This vehicle isn’t just an entry into the premium compact EV segment; it’s a statement of intent from a brand that continues to redefine what luxury driving can be.

A Legacy of Innovation

BMW has always been at the forefront of automotive innovation, daring to introduce vehicles that break the mould. The BMW i3 and i8 were early pioneers, and the current BMW iX continues that tradition. However, the brand’s strategy has evolved, now seamlessly integrating electric variants into its conventional lineup. Models like the iX1, iX3, i4, i5, and the flagship i7 signal a future where electric driving isn’t an alternative – it’s the standard. With more models on the horizon, such as the iX2 and iX5, BMW’s electrified revolution is only just beginning.

Driving the BMW iX1

The BMW iX1 xDrive30e is the brand’s first all-wheel-drive electric car in the premium compact segment, and it delivers a satisfying driving experience. Powered by two highly integrated drive units at the front and rear axles, the iX1 produces a combined output of 230 kilowatts, with a torque of 494 Newton metres. This all-wheel-drive system ensures the kind of traction and stability you expect from BMW, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive technology is at the heart of this vehicle, featuring advanced charging capabilities and a high-voltage battery with a fairly good range of 413 to 438 kilometres (km). However, in real-world conditions, I found the range closer to 400 km — a testament to the challenges of achieving optimal efficiency in varied driving scenarios. My test unit was equipped with the BMW M-Sport Package, featuring striking Cape York Green metallic paint, 19-inch M light alloy wheels, and M Alcantara-veganza seats. These touches, along with the vehicle’s sleek design, make the iX1 not just a mode of transportation, but a statement of style.

A Refined Exterior

The BMW iX1’s exterior design is a masterclass in modern luxury. With its sculpted surfaces, distinctive proportions, and signature BMW X model styling, the iX1 exudes confidence. The upright front end, with slim LED headlights and a large, almost square kidney grille, gives the vehicle a commanding presence on the road. Unique to the iX1 are the BMW i Blue accents, setting it apart from its combustion-engine sibling. From the rear, the iX1 continues to impress, with a dynamically stretched silhouette, horizontal lines, and striking LED lights. It’s a vehicle that looks as good as it drives, capturing attention from every angle.

Sophisticated Interior Design

Step inside the BMW iX1, and you’re greeted by a cabin that seamlessly blends technology and comfort. The redesigned interior features a sleek instrument panel, BMW’s signature Curved Display, and a “floating” armrest with integrated controls. The generous space accommodates five passengers comfortably, with rear seats that can be split 40:20:40 for flexible cargo options. High-end features like ambient lighting, a panoramic glass sunroof, and a Harman Kardon sound system elevate the driving experience, creating a premium atmosphere.

Integrated Connectivity

In an age where connectivity is key, the BMW iX1 doesn’t disappoint. The vehicle comes equipped with a host of automated driving and parking functions, from Cruise Control with brake function to Parking Assistant with a Reversing Camera. Optional features include a Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go, and a BMW HeadUp Display, among others. The MyBMW app allows seamless integration between the vehicle and your smartphone, providing personalised control over the iX1’s functions, including its charging process. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard, ensuring that you’re always connected, whether you’re on the road or at a standstill.

The Verdict

In the realm of luxury electric vehicles, the BMW iX1 is a standout, offering a harmonious blend of performance, design and technology. However, with rivals like the Volvo EX30 offering a more modern design at a more accessible price point (starting at R791 900), the competition is fierce. If I had to choose, the EX30 might edge out the iX1 due to its sleeker profile and affordability.

For those with a penchant for premium brands, the BMW iX1 starts at R1 205 000, inclusive of a 5-year or 100 000km Motorplan. Other contenders in this segment include the Mercedes-Benz EQA, priced from R1 179 400 and the newly launched Lexus NX 350h FSport, a hybrid option starting at R1 225 700. Each of these vehicles offers a unique take on luxury and performance, but the BMW iX1 remains a compelling choice for those who value innovation wrapped in elegance.
