Aston Martin’s new DB12 Volante is a symphony of power, luxury and open-air thrills

By Sony Thomas

Aston Martin’s storied legacy of crafting exceptional supercars takes a bold step forward with the introduction of the highly anticipated DB12 Volante, the captivating open-top variant of the recently unveiled DB12 Coupe. This new addition to the British marque’s lineup seamlessly merges the exhilarating performance and handling of the fixed-roof variant with the thrilling sensory experience of roof-down driving.

Positioned as a “super tourer”, the DB12 Volante carries forward the high-performance legacy of its fixed-roof counterpart, powered by the same impressive twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine sourced from AMG. The V12 option, previously available, is reserved for the upcoming successor to the DBS Superleggera. The DB12 Volante inherits the dynamic capabilities of the DB12 Coupe, focusing on delivering an uncompromising driving experience.

A defining feature of the DB12’s architecture is its robust bonded aluminium structure, engineered to provide exceptional rigidity and support the enhanced dynamics of the DB12 Volante. Key structural elements, including rear suspension upper mounting points and lateral connections, contribute to a nearly five percent increase in torsional stiffness, enhancing the car’s integrity and dynamic performance.

Under the hood, the DB12 Volante boasts 671 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, courtesy of the hand-built twin-turbo V8 engine. This powerplant helps the DB12 Volante accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a mere 3.7 seconds and enables a top speed of 325km/h. Paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and an electronic rear differential, the DB12 Volante offers a refined blend of agility and stability.

The DB12 Volante’s suspension system features new-generation adaptive dampers with a whopping 500 per ent increase in force distribution bandwidth compared to its predecessors, promising superior dynamic capability and character. The vehicle’s Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) promises to provide a direct and intuitive steering feel, enhancing the driver’s connection to the road.

The DB12 Volante’s exterior design is a stunning manifestation of the coupe’s bold aesthetics. The roof mechanism, with its two-stage folding process, enables a remarkably low 260mm stack height when stowed, ensuring packaging efficiency and maximising luggage space. This electrically operated roof can be raised or lowered in a mere 14 to 16 seconds, even while driving at speeds of up to 50km/h.

Inside the cabin, the DB12 Volante offers a luxurious and connected experience. The next-generation infotainment system – developed entirely in-house – features a 10.25-inch pure black touchscreen display with full online connectivity and seamless integration of Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 11-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system that delivers immersive sound quality comes standard, while an optional 15-speaker system promises to take the listening experience to the next level.

Aston Martin’s Q personalisation service allows customers to create a bespoke DB12 Volante tailored to their preferences, ranging from subtle details to entirely unique components.

The global debut of the DB12 Volante took place during Monterey Car Week in California, with appearances at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering and the exclusive Aston Martin Club 1913 at Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance. Production is set to begin in the third quarter of 2023, with deliveries commencing in the fourth quarter.
