For the true connoisseur, a timepiece is a canvas before it is an instrument. Coinciding with Geneva Watch Week in April, and opening to the public for a limited time thereafter, the Patek Philippe Salons in Geneva transform into an exhibition of the decorative arts. This year’s showcase presented 65 new creations that push the boundaries of micro-artistry. From wood micro marquetry to Grand Feu enamelling, the “Rare Handcrafts 2026” collection is a tribute to the artisanal skills that Patek Philippe has championed for nearly two centuries.
The Fable Reimagined
At the entrance to the exhibition is a mechanical tribute to La Fontaine’s The Crow and the Fox. Inspired by a 1958 archival pocket watch, the new Reference 5249R-001 marks the Manufacture’s first contemporary automaton wristwatch. This piece uses a subtle alchemy of horological complication and hand-engraving to bring the classic fable to life, allowing the wearer to trigger a miniature animated drama on demand.
The Amazonian Ballet
The Ref. 22000M-001 “Macaws” dome table clock headlines the collection’s natural wonders section. A masterpiece of Grand Feu cloisonné enamel and miniature painting, it depicts the vivid plumage of birds in the Amazon rainforest. As the first gem-set dome clock in the House’s history, it features an hour circle illuminated by 1 140 diamonds in a delicate snow setting, creating a shimmering contrast against the lush, exotic enamels.
The Spirit of Flamenco
Representing the pinnacle of mixed techniques, the Ref. 992/198J-001 “Flamenco” pocket watch captures the rhythmic intensity of the Spanish dance. The case back features a sunburst guilloché motif, while the dancer’s movements are frozen in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel, flinqué enamel, miniature painting, plique-à-jour enamel (fan), and hand-engraving (border of the case back, bezel and bow).
The artisan’s mastery is also evident in the dancer’s fan, rendered through five colours of miniature painting to achieve a lifelike, iridescent shine that celebrates world culture through refined hand-engraving. The yellow gold stand’s oval base, in black obsidian, is set with a red spinel cabochon (0.35ct). A yellow-gold chain suspending a hand-engraved medallion depicting a fan accompanies the pocket watch.
The exhibition also features artisans at work, applying their techniques such as hand-engraving, enamelling, marquetry, and hand-executed guilloché for visitors to admire, when they’re not gazing at views of Lake Geneva from their fourth-floor vantage point.
