The African Scops Owl is one of the smallest owls on the continent. Although barely 17 centimetres tall, with its finely tuned camouflage and heightened perception, this elusive bird has all the characteristics of its larger counterparts: stillness, attentiveness, and a quiet power of presence.
It was during a meeting to discuss the vision for Tintswalo’s newest villa that its soft, repetitive prrrp call drifted through the air, becoming the inspiration for what would become Tintswalo Scops Rest. This little African Scops Owl has proved the perfect symbol for the lodge: a space defined not by excess, but by intimacy; a retreat where luxury is expressed through quiet detail and where the wilderness is experienced through patient awareness.
Private Safari Escape
The villa is set within the 60 000-hectare Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, which shares borders with the Kruger National Park and the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area, a convenient 30-minute drive from Hoedspruit and Eastgate Airport.
The reserve is renowned for its low vehicle density and exceptional game viewing — thanks to the unfenced borders which enable wildlife to roam freely — as well as its commitment to conservation of this vital ecosystem, which sustains some of the continent’s most endangered species.
Scops Rest adds a new dimension to the brand’s safari portfolio, says Tintswalo’s CEO, Lisa Goosen. “Our 10 000 hectares of traversing rights include 18 kilometres of the perennial Klaserie River. It’s a landscape of endless discovery — wild, free, and beautifully untouched. This new villa offers guests the rare chance to experience it entirely on their own terms.”
Luxury Living
The lodge sleeps up to eight guests. It blends the ease and warmth of a family residence with the indulgence and service of a five-star lodge.
Each of the four en-suite bedrooms opens onto decks with views of the bush, where elephants often lumber past the pool, and a constant stream of birds enjoys the water feature. The spacious main suite has an interleading room that is perfect for children, while one of the other rooms boasts a fabulous outdoor bath —the ideal spot to soak beneath a star-filled sky.
The design is unmistakably Tintswalo: natural textures, calming palettes, and a seamless harmony between inside and out.
There is also a gym, expansive living and dining areas, and an outdoor boma for starlit dinners. For those seeking deeper immersion, two private treehouses offer a sleepout experience under the African night sky. One overlooks the reserve’s largest dam, where hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife provide an ever-changing performance of life at the water’s edge.
Wildlife Encounters
But it is the people at Scops Rest who truly define the experience. As an exclusive-use property, the service is attentive and familiar — the kind that greets you by first name and anticipates your preferences after an initial conversation and the first meal.
Managers Bradley and Demi Rinsma joined us for a couple of meals, where we enjoyed chats about life in the bush and stories, including how the perfect margarita came to be added to the drinks menu.
Bradley, accompanied by tracker Like Gumede, led our twice-daily game drives. While they ensured we ticked off the Big Five, they also created many special moments thanks to a leisurely pace and unrushed sightings.
We witnessed wild dogs and their pups while hearing about their social structure; watched crocs float stealthily through the water and discovered their growth depends on how much they feed; paused to allow a dung beetle to roll its collection across the road; and spent 10 minutes on the bridge, lights off, on a night drive to watch the fireflies dance and listen to the croaks and chirps of frogs.
Signature Service
Signature touches set Scops Rest apart. A pretty, lightweight gown lay on the bed, paired with a handwritten “telegram”. More than a note, it is a message of care: a few words to capture the day, a reminder of tomorrow’s adventure, and a wish for rest beneath the stars. Nostalgic yet intimate, it feels like a letter from a friend.
Homemade crunchies and shortbread — truly out of this world — were delivered with pride by chefs Nelly Godi and Mpho Mawelele.
Drinks, served with a smile by butlers Privvy Sithole and Shanteller Nkuna after a hot and dusty drive, included a frozen margarita (the best I have ever had) and a glowing Tequila Sunrise. And then there were bubbles and oysters with homemade salsa at sundown, overlooking the dam while hippos grunted their evening.
Time to Unwind
Between game drives, guests set their own rhythm. It can be spent floating in the pool, lounging in the sun, working up a sweat in the gym, unwinding with a spa treatment, or simply enjoying the stillness from your verandah.

For me, Tintswalo Scops Rest’s worthy gift is a reminder that luxury can be as much about silence as it is about splendour. Here, luxury is the time to breathe, to listen, to watch the sun set over the dam with the soft call of a little Scops Owl — and Tintswalo gets it just right.
