Sunsets and Margaritas: Rosebank’s Ocaso Restaurant Serves Mexican Flair with a South African Twist

With a Mexican-inspired menu, an extensive cocktail list, and abundant sharing dishes, Ocaso in Oxford Parks is reshaping Rosebank’s dining and nightlife scene.

Ocaso is more than a restaurant — it’s a mood. Here, food and music blend as effortlessly as the delicious meals they serve. The rhythm of the week is carefully curated: Monday to Wednesday leans into comfort and conversation, with mezcal tastings and after-work drinks. From Thursday to Sunday, the tempo rises with R&B, Afrohouse, Amapiano, and Hip-Hop beats, setting the tone for a more festive vibe. On the day we visited, Mo-T from the group MiCasa was playing.

Developed by Heinz Rynners of Boulder Group, Ben Stanger and Luke Dakers of Monseca Hospitality, in partnership with SAB and Corona, the venue embodies the brand’s love of golden hour. Open daily from noon to midnight, it transitions from laid-back lunches to DJ-fuelled evenings, with a sunset gong ritual marking the shift in energy (over 40s, consider this your ‘noise level rising’ warning!). “It’s a space that transforms with you,” says Dakers. “You can ease into it or arrive ready to celebrate.”

Designed by Bourne Kreative, the interiors are a masterclass in brand storytelling. From the mandala-inspired bar to the ocean-blue floor and hand-beaded lanterns, every detail was custom-built to reflect the brand’s values. Seating ranges from intimate banquettes to communal tables and a tucked-away VIP booth, all bathed in warm, shifting light that mirrors the day-to-night experience.

The menu is a vibrant mix of Mexican staples with South African flair. Guacamole is prepared tableside with lime and chilli, while the mini taco tasting board offers a flavour tour from slow-braised beef birria to seared tuna (those tuna tacos are top-tier — thank me later). Corn ribs dusted in smoked paprika have already become a signature order, and crispy empanadas stuffed with pulled chicken, garlic, and onions deliver comfort with a kick. Fried mozzarella sticks with chipotle sauce, bright ceviches, juicy wagyu burgers, and marinated panko pork chops round out the savoury offerings. For dessert, golden churros with chocolate drizzle and the indulgent Bananas Foster are standout finales. (Full disclosure: I ate more of those churros than I should’ve; they were that good.)

The drinks list is equally theatrical. Ocaso boasts an extensive choice of margaritas from classic to spicy. My personal favourite is the Sol Bravio that pairs El Jimador Blanco tequila with hot honey and lime juice for a fiery kick. But if tequila is not your preferred tipple, then other cocktail highlights include the Flor de Sol— a mix of Tanqueray Gin, passionfruit, coconut, lime, and ginger beer— and the Berry Basil Coronita, which playfully combines berry basil cordial with a Corona mini.

Occupying the former Shortmarket Club site (now relocated to The Greenhouse in Sandton, another Monseca venue), Ocaso joins a growing lifestyle cluster in Oxford Parks, a precinct known for its premium restaurants, bars, and pop-up events. A rooftop deck is set to launch this summer, promising a beachy escape in the heart of the city. Ocaso is redefining what a flagship venue can be — where guests don’t just consume a brand but live it.

Bookings are essential, though walk-ins are welcome.
