In the rarefied sphere of high fashion, Gucci stands not merely as a brand, but as a shared cultural touchstone. This belief forms the bedrock of Primavera, the house’s latest collection, which unfolds as a rich tapestry of archetypes, tastes, and identities. Presented within a monumental, museum-like space surrounded by marble statuary, the collection offers a palette of stylistic propositions for those the house already speaks to, and those it hopes to captivate next.
This season, Creative Director Sabato De Sarno establishes a new vocabulary of silhouettes, textures, and materials that will define the house’s evolving design ethos. The collection is driven by rigorous product development prioritising lightness, ease, and body-aware silhouettes. This meticulous approach yields seamless garments cut as close to the body as possible — a quintessentially Gucci sensibility — alongside invisible heat-sealed edges and engineered curved hems.
The narrative opens with a palate cleanser: the ultimate seamless minidress in white hosiery fabric, worn with a distinctly femme fatale attitude. From there, the collection proposes multiple modes of dressing, blurring the boundaries between occasion. Fluid tailoring, rendered in ethereal, liquid-like fabrics, takes on a streetwise edge through low-cut jackets and horizontally pocketed trousers that command a specific posture. The same jackets appear interchangeably with skirts, leggings, and trousers, effortlessly transitioning from the office to the bar.
De Sarno’s perpetual obsession with new garment types comes to the fore. Tracksuits and dresses morph into modern track-dresses; leggings fuse with trousers; jackets merge with tops into single, ultra-fitted forms. This spirit of innovation extends to accessories, where leather shoes and sneakers meld into a silhouette possessing the aerodynamism of a sports car.
Texture and volume play a pivotal role. Voluminous feather embroideries spill from snug bubble blousons and bombers, framing the wearer’s face in soft opulence. Precious leathers, selected for their pliability, lend ease to bikers and fitted pants, while plush circular stoles offer a cocoon of warmth. The surrounding statuary that shaped the designer’s aesthetic sensibility echoes in chiselled Adonis looks celebrating Renaissance ideals of proportion, and in a slinky white gown evoking Botticelli’s Birth of Venus.
The collection’s more daring propositions include precious two-piece sets drowned in embellishment and worn barefoot, alongside risqué gowns and minidresses with waist-high slits. The crescendo is a backless gown that reveals a white-gold GG thong, bedazzled with ten carats of diamonds.
Accessories, too, are reimagined. The iconic Gucci Bamboo 1947 bag is updated with a sleeker volume and a handle of flexible, pieced leather. Archival minaudières are elongated to accommodate the modern essential — a mobile phone. Meanwhile, the new Manhattan sneaker combines an ultra-minimal basketball shape with the slip-on ease of a mocassino, and the soft Giovanni and Cupertino loafers erase the traditional stiffness of leather footwear.
Ultimately, Primavera is built upon a sense of pragmatism. It is a collection designed to be enjoyed, to enrich lives and to stand confidently on its own — without pseudo-intellectual justification. It is Gucci, refined for the way we live now.
