The face of global beauty is increasingly being reshaped from within Africa. Locally owned brands, born from personal need and a deep understanding of diverse skin tones and textures, are gaining significant international acclaim. These companies champion inclusivity, drawing on the continent’s rich botanical heritage and merging it with cutting-edge science.
From luxury skincare to pioneering colour cosmetics, their products now grace the shelves of major retailers worldwide, changing the industry from the continent outward.
Epara Skincare: Luxury Science Rooted in Africa
Founded in 2017 by Nigerian-born entrepreneur Ozohu Adoh, Epara Skincare is a luxury brand specifically made for women of colour. Inspired by Ozohu’s own struggle to find adequate solutions for hyperpigmentation and dryness, the brand blends high-quality, scientifically proven formulations with potent African botanicals.
Ingredients like shea butter from Ghana, moringa oil from Kenya, and argan oil from Morocco target concerns such as sun damage and uneven skin tone. First launched at London’s Harrods, the brand has since expanded to Lagos, Brussels, Nairobi, and the United States.
House of Tara: Pioneering Nigeria’s Beauty Industry
A true pioneer, House of Tara was founded in 1998 by then 20-year-old Tara Fela-Durotoye. Revolutionising Nigeria’s beauty industry, it introduced the country’s first bridal directory, makeup school, and indigenous product line.
More than a cosmetics company, it became an empowerment platform, building a vast network of representatives and setting a standard for products tailored to African skin tones. In 2025, the lawyer-turned-entrepreneur transitioned leadership to managing director Rosemary Layode, ensuring the company’s continued growth and legacy.
Uncover: K-Beauty Innovation Meets African Botanicals
Blending Korean beauty innovation with African botanicals, Uncover formulates specifically for melanin-rich skin. Co-founded by Sneha Mehta, Jade Oyateru, and Catherine Lee, this Kenya-based skincare brand works with South Korean laboratories and fuses it with locally sourced ingredients like baobab, argan, and rooibos.
Crucially, products are tested and approved by women across Africa, ensuring efficacy against concerns like hyperpigmentation and acne in tropical climates. A market innovator, the company was the first to introduce pimple patches and popular sheet masks to Kenya’s beauty market.
Available through its e-commerce platform and retailers like Goodlife in Kenya and Nigeria, Uncover has expanded into Uganda and Ghana.
