As winter settles over Stellenbosch, there’s something especially appealing about escaping to a destination where exceptional food, world-class wines, and breathtaking scenery come together effortlessly. Nestled in a picturesque valley, Neil Ellis Wines offers an inviting winter retreat, where warm hospitality, outstanding cuisine, and an unforgettable dining experience await.
We started our meal with the restaurant’s famous flatbreads, and they certainly lived up to their reputation. Fresh from the oven, and full of flavour, they’re the ideal way to begin your meal and an absolute must-order.
One of the highlights of our visit was the guided wine tasting, enjoyed alongside our meal. It isn’t just recommended – it’s an essential part of dining at Neil Ellis Wines, allowing each course to be paired thoughtfully with the estate’s wines.
My favourite was undoubtedly the Bottelary Pinotage 2020: rich, elegant, and beautifully balanced. It’s the one bottle I simply had to take home.
For our main courses, we chose the Grilled Line Fish, served with a sensational aromatic curry sauce and a fresh herb salad. The delicate fish and fragrant sauce combined to create a dish that was both comforting and sophisticated.
For meat lovers, the Neil’s Cut is a standout. This 21-day dry-aged sirloin is expertly prepared, packed with flavour, and cooked to perfection – an easy recommendation for anyone visiting.
To finish, we indulged in the Chocolate Brownie – the perfect ending to a memorable meal. Rich, decadent, and deeply indulgent, it delivered all the comforting flavours you’d hope for without being overly sweet, striking just the right balance.
If the Cape winter weather decides to make an appearance, there’s no need to worry. The stylish restaurant offers a warm and inviting indoor space, where a crackling fireplace creates the perfect cosy atmosphere, making it just as enjoyable on a rainy day as it is when the sun is shining.
With sweeping valley views, exceptional wines, thoughtfully crafted seasonal dishes, and warm hospitality, Neil Ellis Wines offers a winter retreat that invites you to slow down and savour the season. Whether you’re planning a leisurely lunch, a special date, or a weekend escape in Stellenbosch, it’s a destination that’s well worth adding to your winter itinerary.
