If there’s an exhibition you must see while in the Mother City over the next few weeks, it is Thero Makepe’s It’s Not Going to Get Better. It’s the Botswana-born photographer’s first solo exhibition and explores contemporary Botswana, focusing on the 2024 General Elections in that country.
Makepe offers a poignant reflection on the people – their struggles, resilience, and hope – as they navigate the complexities of change following 58 years of continuous rule. Employing a constructed approach to image-making, Makepe blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction.
“We are participants and bystanders at the same time. There’s a conundrum of being concerned about international affairs while ignoring the pertinent issues right in front of you,” says the artist.
