Ferrari’s one-off Tailor Made 812 Competizione is inspired by a blank canvas

By Sony Thomas

With the automotive industry constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation, it takes something truly exceptional to capture our attention. Ferrari’s one-of-a-kind 812 Competizione, the result of a creative journey inspired by the concept of a blank sheet, is one such car.

This special Tailor Made edition of the 812 Competizione is part of an exclusive series limited to 999 units, designed for the most discerning collectors and enthusiasts of Maranello’s twelve-cylinder supercars. The uniqueness of this model lies not only in its rarity but also in its origin story. The car is inspired by the famous yellow cards often seen in the hands of Ferrari designers — a canvas where the creative process begins. These yellow cards are used to transfer their initial ideas, insights, and notes from their minds onto paper. It’s a process where the sparks of inspiration are nurtured, ideas take shape and evolve, and the seeds of new concepts and iconic shapes are sown.

The development of the car required over a year of close collaboration between the Ferrari Styling Centre and the Tailor Made team, who took on the challenge of striking a perfect balance between flawless technical execution and the preservation of the creative spark that originated from the drawings of Ferrari’s Chief Design Officer, Flavio Manzoni. The exterior of this 812 Competizione, finished in matte Giallo Tristrato, features intricate lines inspired by the initial sketches that Ferrari designers use to transfer their ideas onto paper. The lines emphasise key elements such as the carbon fibre blade on the front bonnet, louvres on the sides paying homage to Ferrari’s 12-cylinder heritage, and vortex generators on the rear screen.

Inside, the cabin is draped in a new-generation Alcantara, crafted from 65 per cent recycled polyester, introduced on the Ferrari Purosangue. What makes this interior truly unique is the direct embroidery of design sketches onto the Alcantara, an innovative technique typically reserved for leather. Completing the elegant interior is the black Superfabric used for the carpet and rear wall.

Underneath its bespoke exterior and interior lies the heart of the 812 Competizione, an exhilarating 830-horsepower V12 engine, which, along with a responsive four-wheel steering system helps the car push the boundaries of performance.

Ferrari Tailor Made, the brand’s exclusive personalisation programme, played a pivotal role in bringing this unique 812 Competizione to life. It allows customers to create a Ferrari that mirrors their character and personal tastes, guided by a team of experts and a personal designer. In a world of automotive conformity, the Tailor Made Ferrari 812 Competizione stands as a testament to creativity, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of excellence. It’s a reminder that true luxury lies in the bespoke, the unique, and the exceptional.

Commissioned by Ferrari North America, this Tailor Made masterpiece will be auctioned off at the Ferrari Gala in New York City on October 17, with all proceeds earmarked for charitable endeavours focused on education support.
