Performance Meets Sustainability: Testing the Audi RS e-tron GT

The German carmaker’s electric flagship delivers a thrilling driving experience, combining top-tier dynamics with a commitment to conscious luxury

By Edward Moleke Makwana

When Audi unveiled the flagship models of their electric vehicle (EV) lineup, the Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT, in South Africa in 2022, it was a momentous occasion. This launch echoed the groundbreaking debut of the BMW i8 in 2015, marking Audi South Africa’s bold leap into the future of luxury EVs and underscoring a pivotal shift in the automotive landscape. As of 2026, Audi will exclusively launch new models with electric drive systems globally, solidifying their commitment to sustainable luxury.

First Impressions

I recently had the opportunity to spend a few days with the Audi RS e-tron GT, courtesy of Audi South Africa. From the moment it arrived, the RS e-tron GT captivated with its evocative design. However, its low profile proved challenging in areas with numerous speed humps and uneven roads. Despite this, the RS e-tron GT demonstrates how dynamic and fascinating electromobility can be for those fortunate enough to enjoy smoother driving conditions.

Performance and Charging

Equipped with two electric motors, the Audi RS e-tron GT delivers dynamic driving performance and electric all-wheel drive. With a net energy content of 84 kWh, the highvoltage battery enables ranges of up to 488 kilometres, though my full charge achieved 423 kilometres. Charging on a DC fast charger at the Fourways Mall in Johannesburg took an hour and 20 minutes from 46 per cent to 100 per cent. The vehicle boasts an output of 440 kilowatts (kW); in over-boost, it can deliver 475 kW. With a total torque of 830 Newton metres (Nm), it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds. The two-speed transmission on the rear axle engages first gear from a standstill, providing the RS e-tron GT with exceptional dynamism, stability, and traction. Audi Drive Select offers four modes and controlled damping, enhancing ride comfort and handling. The lightweight aluminium wheel suspensions and carbon fibre ceramic brakes ensure agility and durability. The all-wheel steering option further improves manoeuvrability, turning the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the front wheels at low speeds to reduce the turning circle.

Evocative Design

The Audi RS e-tron GT’s exterior is a work of art with balanced proportions, a long wheelbase, a wide track, large wheels, and a flat roofline. The four-door coupé is five metres long and nearly two metres wide but stands just 1.41 metres high. The design is harmonious, from the headlights (or optional Audi laser lights) and powerful quattro blisters to the wheels and the large rear diffuser. The test unit featured Kemora grey paint and a glass roof. There’s the option of a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer roof. Inside, the ambience is that of a classic Gran Turismo.

The spacious interior, separated by a wide centre console, places the driver and front passenger in a sporty, low position. The instrument panel, based on Audi’s “monoposto” design, faces the driver. The rear luggage compartment offers 350 litres of space, with an additional 81 litres under the hood. The digital Audi virtual cockpit plus, controlled via the multifunction steering wheel and central MMI touch display, operates the displays and controls. The MMI navigation plus includes the e-tron route planner, which calculates charging stops for optimal travel. The etron sport sound, offered as standard, generates a high-quality, progressive sound both inside and outside the vehicle, adjustable via Audi Drive Select.

Conclusion

The Audi RS e-tron GT is a compelling choice for urban dwellers who appreciate sleek design, cutting-edge technology, and exhilarating performance on well-maintained roads. While SUVs continue to dominate the market, the RS e-tron GT will appeal to those who prioritise exclusivity, luxury and performance in a sophisticated electric sedan.

It stands as a testament to Audi’s innovative spirit and commitment to sustainable driving. If you’re considering the Audi RS e-tron GT, anticipate the updated model launching soon in South Africa, offering advances in range, performance, charging and suspension. The base price of the Audi RS e-tron GT is R3 300 000 – with the test vehicle’s options totalling R224 800 – bringing the price to R3 524 800. Alternatively, consider the Porsche Taycan 4S, priced from R3 223 000 or R3 323 000, depending on the service plan chosen or the MercedesAMG EQS Sedan priced from R2 739 204.
