Experience the Pinnacle of Motoring Luxury and Performance

By Edward Moleke Makwana

As South Africa embraces the onset of spring, the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand becomes the pulsating epicentre of automotive passion, hosting the ninth South African Festival of Motoring (SAFoM). Sponsored by WesBank and brought to life by Messe Frankfurt, this event is not just a festival – it’s a symphony of speed, luxury and innovation, orchestrated to captivate the hearts of motoring enthusiasts across the country and continent.

Having the privilege to attend the exclusive media day, I found myself immersed in an atmosphere brimming with excitement and anticipation. SAFoM has grown into the largest industry-supported auto show in Africa, a testament to South Africa’s thriving automotive culture. With over 100 exhibitors, visitors are invited to experience the thrill of test-driving the latest models on the iconic Kyalami Circuit, while enjoying a weekend filled with family friendly activities. Beyond the gleaming exteriors and roaring engines, SAFoM is a celebration – a fusion of automotive excellence and lifestyle, where the road meets luxury.

Among the stars of the festival was the much-anticipated reveal of Ford’s seventh generation Mustang GT. Set to grace South African roads this October, with only 150 units available, this Mustang is more than just a car – it’s a legacy reborn. For over 60 years, the Mustang has been an emblem of freedom and power, and the latest iteration continues this proud tradition.

With its naturally aspirated 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine, delivering 328 kilowatts (kW) of peak power and 540 newton metres (Nm) of torque, this automotive icon promises an exhilarating drive. The fighter jet-inspired digital cockpit, with its dual customisable displays, ensures that the experience is as modern as it is thrilling.

The festival also highlighted the growing influence of Asian automotive brands in South Africa. Omoda and Jaecoo, both under the umbrella of Chinese automotive giants, made their presence felt with the sleek C9 and the all-electric J6, respectively. These models, set to hit the market later this year, signal a new era of competition in the premium segment.

Meanwhile, BAIC introduced the stylish Beijing X55, and BYD showcased its Tesla-inspired SEAL model, marking a new chapter in electric mobility. Chery and Suzuki added to the mix with their latest offerings, the Tiggo Cross and the fourth-generation Swift, respectively, each designed to cater to a new generation of drivers.

Lamborghini, synonymous with uncompromising luxury and performance, unveiled the awe-inspiring Revuelto – a super sports car that embodies the future of high-performance driving. With a naturally aspirated V12 engine paired with three electric motors, the Revuelto is a masterpiece of engineering, boasting 725Nm of torque and a jaw-dropping 1015 CV (over 700kW) of power.

This electrified marvel accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 350 km/h, making every drive a breathtaking experience. The Revuelto isn’t just a car; it’s a statement of power and elegance. Not to be outdone, Bentley and Porsche showcased their latest models, each embodying the very essence of luxury and craftsmanship. Volkswagen Africa introduced the new Touareg, set to redefine expectations when it arrives later this year. And for those looking to the future, VW’s charming electric ID.Buzz, expected in early 2025, represents a bold step into the era of sustainable luxury.

Volvo, the Swedish marque known for its commitment to safety and innovation, presented the “Adventure Beast” edition of the XC90 – a customised marvel designed for those who seek luxury and adventure in equal measure. With enhancements like 20-inch all-terrain tires and Thule’s Approach M rooftop tent, this edition redefines versatility, making it the perfect companion for South Africa’s outdoor enthusiasts.

The festival also served as a grand stage for Stellantis, the Dutch-headquartered automotive powerhouse. Their display was a testament to European flair, showcasing a lineup of brands that have shaped motoring history across continents. From the rugged reliability of Jeep to the refined elegance of Peugeot, from Opel’s German precision to Fiat’s Italian charm, and the French born Citroen – each brand stood as a beacon of innovation and heritage, illustrating Stellantis’ commitment to offering something for every type of driver.

From Friday, 30 August to Sunday, 1 September, SAFoM is open to the public, offering a unique opportunity to experience the heartbeat of motoring.
