While smaller case sizes have been increasing in popularity over the past few years, mini jewellery watches have long been part of the Cartier stable. Miniaturised versions of the Tank Louis Cartier, Tank Américaine, Baignoire, Panthère de Cartier, and a Tortue model from 1922 are highly sought-after. Interest in the Baignoire with its oval dial surged after last year’s launch of new pieces at Watches and Wonders, including a bangle version that some call a cult classic. Christie’s Hong Kong opened its Spring 2024 Watch Season in March with Watches Online: The Hong Kong Edit. The sale featured an “ultra-sought-afterCartier Baignoire S (22 x 48 mm) in 18k pink gold and diamond-set (Est. HK$ 100,000 – 200,000)”, which sold for HK$ 478,800! The collection now includes a diamond and yellow gold model on a leather strap or an all-gold bangle version. The mini watches measure 24.6mm x 18.7mm.
It’s not unusual to see a man wearing a small watch, especially when it’s by Cartier. Mini Panthère de Cartier watches with square dials and rounded edges tuck neatly beneath a coat sleeve or tux. The Cartier collection contains three models in yellow gold (25mm x 19mm), rose gold set with brilliant-cut diamonds (25mm x 20mm), and a yellow gold and steel model (25mm x 37mm).
The Tank Louis Cartier, with its stretched case and gentle contours, was created five years after the emblematic Tank appeared in 1917. The characteristic parallel brancards, blued hands, Roman numerals and winding mechanism adorned with a sapphire cabochon now appear in a small-scale yellow-gold replica, just 24mm x 16.5mm. Meanwhile, the slightly curved Tank Américaine, created in 1988, has been transformed into 28mm x 15.2mm versions fastened with a leather strap or diamond-paved bracelet. Academy Award-winning actor Rami Malek is a fan – and he’s featured in several of the maison’s advertising campaigns.
Finally the mini Tortue, mimicking the tortoise-shell shaped model released in 1912, is available in a limited edition of 150 numbered pieces. This special reissue in yellow gold and beige lacquer on a beige leather strap takes its style cues from a 1922 creation. It measures 26.15mm x 20.9mm.
