The latest collaboration between legendary British band Depeche Mode and Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot reveals anything but an average timepiece. It’s a limited-edition masterpiece that’s as much a collector’s item for music lovers as a statement piece for watch aficionados.
The watch is a tribute to Depeche Mode’s March 2023 comeback, announced through the release of their 15th studio album “Memento Mori” and worldwide concert tour. The Spirit of Big Bang Depeche Mode takes the signature tonneau shape into a sleek, all-black design (think rockstar chic) combining a powerful skull motif – a nod to an emblem in the video announcing the band’s return – with an hourglass to symbolise the passage of time. Small black ceramic spheres symbolically flow back and forth across the dial’s centre as the wrist moves, conveying the concept of Memento Mori, which translates to “remember you must die.” It’s a compelling reminder of the importance of cherishing the present moment.
But the creation of this 42mm watch made of sand-blasted and polished black ceramic isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about making a difference. Hublot and Depeche Mode have a long history of supporting good causes, and this time, they’re backing Conservation Collective, a global charity fighting to protect our environment. By purchasing this limited-edition timepiece (only 100 available), you get a stunning watch and contribute to a worthy cause.
“Memento Mori encourages us to be more mindful of just how fragile our existence is. This is why joining forces once again with our trusted friends at Hublot makes so much sense. Together, we can raise public awareness of environmental issues and support Conservation Collective in their efforts to protect our planet and life in all its forms,” said Martin Gore, a member of Depeche Mode.
“For almost 14 years now, Hublot has been working alongside Depeche Mode to protect humankind and our environment,” said Ricardo Guadalupe, Hublot CEO. “Memento Mori makes us conscious of the passing of time. This is something that we, as watchmakers, are naturally aware of. This is a serious issue, but one that we approach with joy and energy inspired by the music of Depeche Mode,” he added.
Ben Goldsmith of Conservation Collective expressed gratitude, stating: “We are delighted and hugely grateful to have the support of Hublot and Depeche Mode as we work to turbocharge environmental restoration efforts in a growing list of places around the world. Conservation Collective now comprises 20 locally focused environment foundations, and each one of them is providing support to grassroots organisations which are creating cascading positive change in each of those places. This new funding from Hublot and Depeche Mode is a game-changer for these efforts.”
The watch comes with some amazing extras – an interchangeable strap: one made from recycled materials, aligning with the environmental message, and another in classic black rubber for a touch of rockstar edge. But the real cherry on top? A 10-inch vinyl single of Depeche Mode’s “Wagging Tongue,” pressed on recycled PVC using green energy –exclusive to this watch package.
