EL&N London: The Pink Palace at Mall of Africa

From its fashion-led interiors to its indulgent patisserie, EL&N offers a distinctly London-inspired café experience in the heart of Waterfall, Midrand.

There’s a reason Mall of Africa has earned its crown as the Coolest Mall in South Africa. It’s a mecca for shopping enthusiasts and a treasure trove of the world’s favourite brands. But beyond the retail therapy, and especially for families, it’s become a haven for kids. With its expansive outdoor play area and carnival atmosphere, it’s the kind of place where a simple shopping trip can turn into a full day’s adventure. Yet, amid all this bustling family fun, there exists a pocket of glamour that feels a world away, while being perfectly at home: EL&N London.

Since its inception in the heart of Mayfair in 2017, EL&N (pronounced e-lán) has been on a mission to elevate global café culture. With over 35 stores in iconic locations like Dubai, Riyadh, and Doha, this London-born sensation has become synonymous with chic, stylish environments. And now, right here in the heart of Waterfall at Mall of Africa, it offers a vibrant and delicious escape.

From the moment you ascend the stairs, you’re transported. The aesthetic is an explosion of millennial pink, floral walls, and that distinct, fashion-led energy that founder Alexandra Miller, a veteran of the luxury fashion world, envisioned as accessible to everyone. On a recent Sunday afternoon, the café was buzzing. It was a joy to watch the room: groups of girlfriends laughing, sisters catching up over coffees, and stylish moms taking a well-deserved break. It’s a space that just makes you feel pretty.

Let’s talk about the food because, while the interiors are a feast for the eyes, the menu is a celebration for the palate. The pizzas, pastas, and burgers are great (the Truffle Mac and Cheese is a must), but where EL&N truly shines is the patisserie.

You have to save room, because the dessert counter is a spectacle of indulgence. The Dulce de Leche Milk Cake is their cult classic, and for good reason. It’s a light milk sponge soaked in vanilla cream, and you can get it topped with everything from Lotus Biscoff to Peppermint Crisp. It’s dangerously good. But the showstopper is the viral Dubai Kunafa Cheesecake. It’s their take on the world-famous Dubai chocolate bar, translated into a baked cheesecake that features a crunchy pistachio kunafa and a biscuit base. It’s textural heaven.

We also sampled the San Sebastián cheesecake – caramelised and creamy – and it was a perfect companion to their famous Spanish Latte.

It’s not just the food; it’s the feeling. EL&N at Mall of Africa has taken the spirit of Mayfair and transplanted it to Joburg, creating a setting for a girly brunch or a decadent catch-up. While it does lean towards the premium side, you’re paying for an experience: an Instagram-worthy backdrop, attentive service, and the kind of deliciously sweet treats that make the Dine to Win campaign at Mall of Africa even sweeter.

So, next time you’re at Mall of Africa, grab your girls, or treat yourself, and take a seat in the pink palace. Just remember to save room for cake.
