Celebrated South African fashion designer Thebe Magugu is set to make his highly anticipated debut in luxury hospitality this December, partnering with Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town.
Marking the 10th anniversary of his eponymous label, Thebe will unveil two landmark projects: The Thebe Magugu Suite, his first foray into interior design, and Magugu House Cape Town, an adjoining concept store and cultural gallery.
This collaboration, Belmond’s first-ever Designer Residence, sees Thebe’s distinctive Afro-modernist vision breathe new life into a historic wing of the iconic 126-year-old ‘Nellie’.
The suite promises to be an elegant trove of South African culture, offering guests an immersive journey into the creativity and intellect that defines the House of Magugu.
“Together, the Mount Nelson and I have crafted a space rooted deeply in place and purpose, with a strong commitment to preserving the culture from which we draw inspiration,” says Thebe.
Inside The Thebe Magugu Suite
Renowned for a design philosophy that celebrates African identity with contemporary sophistication, Thebe has applied his meticulous, research-led approach to the suite’s redesign.
Working with the interior savants at StudioLandt, he explores a compelling ‘Afro-English’ aesthetic, juxtaposing British and South African design heritage within the hotel’s storied walls.
Set across two floors along the iconic Palm Avenue, the suite is a study in sleek, soulful modernism. A striking lobby leads to a characterful lounge and dining area, designed for intimate gatherings and featuring a curated cocktail cabinet.
Upstairs, a secluded king-size bedroom opens onto a balcony with views of the hotel’s rolling lawns and Table Mountain beyond.
The colour palette transitions from vibrant greens to warm harvest shades, set against terrazzo floors in non-traditional peat and green. A hand-sketched wallpaper — a homage to classic British interiors — features a reimagined panoramic view of a Southern African landscape.
“Textures in this space are stone and timber, to give the impression that designs are of ‘the earth’, and thus can be given back,” Thebe notes.
The space is enriched with hand-carved furniture and a rotating curation of artworks from Southern Guild, beginning with paintings by Mmangaliso Nzuza, alongside works by Lulama Wolf, Zandile Tshabalala, and Trevor Stuurman.
Personal heritage is woven throughout: a pendant light inspired by the Basotho mokorotlo hat anchors the dining area, while bespoke wooden furniture takes its form from traditional pottery.
Hand-pleated textiles echo a cherished memory of his grandmother tending to her church garments.
Magugu House Cape Town: Fashion Meets Art
Adjoining the suite, Magugu House, Cape Town, will open as a dynamic hub for aesthetic exchange. Conceived as part concept store, part cultural institute, it mirrors its Johannesburg predecessor.
The space will serve as a showroom for Thebe’s limited-edition and archival pieces, alongside a gallery showcasing sought-after artists. Its inaugural exhibition will feature works by sculptor Zizipho Poswa and photographer Zanele Muholi.
The House will host salon-style events, screenings, and exhibits, establishing itself as a vibrant platform for the continent’s next generation of creative visionaries.
A curated selection of books and objects celebrating African design, literature, and craft will complete the offering.
“Magugu House Cape Town heroes African luxury: refined, forward-looking yet rooted in culture,” says Thebe. “It is a space where the past, present, and imagined future of Africa exist in dialogue — an intersection of heritage and innovation.”
A Lasting Design Legacy at Mount Nelson
This landmark project evolves from ‘Confections x Collections’ (CxC), an annual celebration of Pan-African fashion curated by sustainability platform Twyg, for which Thebe was the inaugural designer.
The launch will coincide with the fourth instalment of CxC and the unveiling of Thebe’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection, transcending the ephemeral nature of a fashion show to leave a permanent, tangible expression of creativity within the iconic hotel.
