Why Lymphatic Massage Is the Detox Boost Your Body Needs

A gentle detox that delivers big results – lymphatic drainage massage remains one of the best treatments for a healthier you.

The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in eliminating waste, reducing inflammation and boosting circulation. It is a treatment that I have always believed as I have seen results with a combination of professional lymphatic drainage and at-home maintenance. Visible results include clearer, brighter skin and if done consistently, a decrease in cellulite, and internally the reduction in bloating is significant.

In search of a detox kick-start to the year, I contacted Nix and Tee, a wellness and aesthetics clinic based in Sandhurst. After a consultation with Turid Stacey (Tee), we settled on the lymphatic drainage treatment. “The lymphatic system lacks a natural pump (unlike the circulatory system), so it relies on movement, breathing and external stimulation (such as massage) to function effectively,” explained Tee. “Lymphatic massage helps to remove toxins and excess fluids, reduce puffiness and bloating, enhance immune function and improve circulation and oxygenation.”

Tee advises consulting a professional before getting a lymphatic massage if you have medical conditions like heart issues, kidney disease or infections, consult a professional.

The treatment

The treatment involves being zipped up in what looks like a space suit which is then connected to a specialised massage device. It feels as though the suit tightens and releases (it’s a similar feeling to having your blood pressure taken albeit on a larger surface), but is gentle and painless. It takes 30 minutes and you remain fully clothed sans shoes so is a quick and easy option. A series of six to eight treatments is recommended and it can be combined with other treatments based on your needs. Cost: R318 per treatment (10 percent discount for an upfront payment of a package).

During the treatment, Tee gave some more insight into the ins and outs of lymph drainage:

How often should one get a lymphatic drainage massage?

For water retention or sluggish lymphatic system: two to three times a week initially, then reduce as needed. Once a month is advised for general wellness. For detox or post-surgery recovery, once a week for a few weeks.

Can you do lymphatic drainage at home?

You can stimulate your lymphatic system at home using:

• Dry brushing before showering
Gua sha or facial rollers for the face and neck
Self-massage (gentle, upward strokes towards lymph nodes)
• Hydration and herbal teas to support detox
• Rebounding or movement (jumping on a mini-trampoline or light stretching)

Does lymphatic drainage help with weight loss?

Lymphatic massage itself does not directly cause weight loss but can reduce bloating and water retention, improve digestion and metabolism, and support fat breakdown by improving circulation. When combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, it can enhance the body’s ability to shed excess weight and reduce inflammation.

What should be done post-treatment?

• Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine and processed foods for at least 24 hours
• Gentle movement (walking or stretching) to keep lymph flowing
• Deep breathing exercises to enhance circulation
• Rest and relax to allow the body to recover

Are there any side effects?

Lymphatic drainage is generally safe, but some people may experience:

• Mild fatigue or dizziness (as toxins are flushed out)
• Slight headache
• Increased urination and stronger smelling urine
