For the 2024 De Beers Shining Light Awards, each designer submitted a collection of a ring, necklace, earrings, bangles or bracelets. Otlotleng was inspired by the ocean in her designs, and it was these shimmering pieces that earned her first place in South Africa.

Originally launched in 1995, the Shining Light Awards take place every two years. The top young designers from the countries where De Beers recovers diamonds, including Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa are selected, and given prizes including business support, a structured skills development programme, and tuition assistance.

Otlotleng entered the competition while studying jewellery design in Rustenburg, and says the overall experience was incredible. “It challenged my creativity and refined my skills.” Herpieces were inspired by creatures of the ocean such as oysters and sea urchins which represented self-discovery, growth, and transformation. “Oysters transform irritation into beautiful pearls, so I created each piece in the collection to capture the intricate beauty, growth and transformation which symbolises strength and something precious and valuable.”

Using the patterns, texture and natural elegance of nature served as a foundation for creating unique and sophisticated pieces. The competition theme this year was Luxury Redefined, and Otlotleng kept this framework top of mind as she designed earrings, a ring, a pendant and a bracelet. “I understand luxury as a blend of sophistication and exclusivity. For me, luxury isn’t just about high costs or opulence, it’s about craftsmanship, attention to detail and creating pieces that evoke a sense of beauty and individuality. I believe that true luxury offers a personal connection, combining timeless elegance with innovative designs that stand out while remaining accessible to those who value quality and uniqueness.”

Long before she set out to become a jewellery designer, Otlotleng displayed a keen eye for styling. She was in high school with ambitions of becoming a doctor, but a morning routine between her and her mum gave signs of a creative touch. Whenever her mum was getting dressed for work, there’d be a brief consultation of what earrings or necklace would work best with her outfit. Otlotleng enjoyed these discussions and grew in confidence as her mum followed her advice and walked out of the house looking beautiful and elegantly accessorised.

That raw talent has been honed and fortified through studies, mentorship and Otlotleng’s own passion. “I consider myself a good designer because of my creativity, attention to detail and ability to translate ideas into beautiful wearable art. My understanding of materials, like moissanite and cubic zirconia, combined with my technical skills in crafting and design, allows me to create unique and meaningful pieces. Additionally, my commitment to quality and my passion for jewellery design helped me connect with my customers and bring their visions to life.”

In 2024, Otlotleng started Radiant Reverie Jewellery, a business that caters to all aspects of jewellery from design to repairs to maintenance. Fresh off the back of the top finish at the De Beers competition, she’s envisioning a dazzling future. “My vision is to provide exceptional jewellery services locally, but also to expand and have my business recognised and running all over the world, offering quality and creativity on a global scale.”
