While it may seem that magnolia is the ingredient of the moment, it is quite common in floral scents and has been used in fragrances for centuries. Magnolia essential oil comes from the Chinese magnolia tree and is often paired with other light florals or with citrus notes for a fresh scent profile.
Acqua di Parma has a long history with magnolia-scented creations and now the white flower takes centre-stage again in the new Acqua di Parma Magnolia Infinita Eau de Parfum (from R4,200) in the Signatures of the Sun collection, a series of perfumes where each fragrance focuses on one ingredient on the label.
What does it smell like?
The sweet creaminess of magnolia is definitely the first nose-full you get, but then there’s a rather surprising scent trail, thanks to how the composition of ingredients allows the wearer to experience a different experience of what is a well-known ingredient. Top notes include a fresh citrus burst of bergamot, orange, and lemon. Then comes the heart of magnolia, Sambac jasmine, rose and ylang-ylang, warmed by a base of patchouli and musk. It’s targeted at men and women, and despite the overtly floral nature, the woody notes give it a slight masculine touch.
A nod to the planet

Acqua di Parma started over a century ago in 1916 when it launched Colonia, which has subsequently become a true icon of Italian style. Lines now include Barbiere, Le Nobili, Blu Mediterraneo, Signatures of the Sun, and the Home Collection. Colonia and Blu Mediterraneo also make an appearance in the Hotel Line, which is distributed in premium hotels worldwide. All the lines are still manufactured in Italy.
