During her Blonde Ambition tour in 1990, Madonna made sartorial choices that would end up becoming powerful statements and references other artists would draw from for decades. With blonde hair in curls, and wearing a corset as outerwear, the singer gave a new perspective of the female silhouette. Versions of the conical bras she wore (one peach-coloured, and the other in solid gold) have been recreated by contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna.
Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana unabashedly celebrated Madonna in this show. Their show notes explained that the collections honours “an iconic and powerful female figure, immortalised by cinema through the decades, capable of asserting her personality while staying true to herself”.
