I have raved about QMS treatments before and my love affair with the brand was reignited this week when I had another appointment with the amazing QMS Skin Expert Andy Vilakazi. This time I was there to try the new Derma Expert LED Light Treatment combined with the QMS COLLAgEN 3D Gel Mask, part of the new Precision Care line, a breakthrough in tech.
Andy started with a double cleanse using the QMS Gentle Cleansing Milk. This was followed by a double exfoliation, a light fruit acid exfoliation, boosted with the AHA Active Exfoliant to significantly improve skin quality. (I took a peek after this and my skin was already glowing.)
The third step was applying the Algae Face Mask, which is applied over the entire face, including eyes and lips, leaving only the nostrils open. It’s super cool and soothing, very hydrating, and the infusion of collagen means the skin looks plump and glowy afterwards.
It was now time for the new star of the show…
Andy applied the new QMS COLLAgEN 3D Gel Mask, part of the new Precision Line, which boasts the world’s first skin-identical micro-molecular collagen. This micro-molecule’s tiny structure and weight allow for the deepest penetration into the skin and, because it’s skin-identical, is perfectly compatible with the skin. The Gel Mask has a multi-pronged effect on ageing: it reduces inflammation, protects against oxidative stress and intensively strengthens the skin’s resilience across the layers.
Leaving it on, Andy strapped the Derma Expert LED Light Treatment around my head. Thanks to the flexibility of the silicone mask, it moulds to the contours of the face so I hardly felt it, other than slight warmth from the light. In addition to enhancing the effects of the gel mask, the Derma Expert mask has three wavelengths, which means a triple whammy of benefits. What’s key is the wavelength, explains Rowan Hall-Farrise, Head of International Training at QMS Medicosmetics, which is why so many LED masks designed for at-home use are not as effective. “In this one, 633nm wavelength (red light) repairs – boosting collagen production and reducing redness. The 830nm stimulates by enhancing healing, circulation, and blood flow, and 1 070nm (both are neat infrared light) enhances the complexion, minimising under-eye bags and refining skin texture, thanks to the deep-penetrating wavelength. It’s advised to use the mask for 10 minutes, three to five times a week for best results.”
After the recommended 10 minutes, the mask was removed and Andy applied the Collagen Sheet Mask, which is infused with 100 per cent collagen fibres, peptides, molecules as well as stem cell technology. Again, this has a triple action: the collagen peptides promote regeneration and repair, the collagen molecules provide intensive moisture, help smooth out wrinkles, and reduce redness, while the advanced Swiss Apple Stem Cell Complex protects and repairs the skin’s barrier.
The verdict
Using the LED mask in conjunction with a targeted treatment literally takes that treatment to another level. The difference in my skin was immediately visible: plum, hydrated, glowing and, dare I say, more youthful. The effects of the treatment also lasted a few days. With at-home maintenance using the Derma Expert Red Light Mask, the results only improve. Is the LED mask worth purchasing? If you care about your skin and seek results – absolutely. At R10 000 for a professional-grade mask, you can do the regular LED therapies in the convenience of your home, boosting the results with your regular salon visits.
