In one of my former corporate roles with a premium car brand, I was introduced to a world of fine dining and sophisticated hospitality locally and in different countries, igniting a passion for discovering unique restaurants. For the past 15 years, I’ve relished the experience of uncovering hidden gems in the culinary scene. What fascinates me most is observing how some eateries not only survive but thrive, transforming into institutions that defy time, while others fade away. Recently, I found myself captivated by one such thriving gem – Ukkō, a dining sanctuary nestled in the Winifred Mandela Precinct (formerly Nicolway Shopping Centre) in Bryanston.
My introduction to Ukkō came through my eldest brother, during its early days of operation. Now, several years later, the restaurant has not only matured but evolved into something more extraordinary, an oasis of elegance. Its name, derived from the Finnish god “Ukkonen,” references the deity of sky, weather, and harvest – a symbolic nod to communal gatherings, feasts, and moments of celebration. In this space, Ukkō has indeed become a place where people come together to savour life, laughter, and moments of indulgence.
An Unforgettable Experience
Stepping into Ukkō feels like pressing pause on the world – an escape wrapped in modern elegance. The setting exudes calmness in a busy city, while the impeccable service immediately signals that you are about to embark on something special. Within moments of arriving, I was greeted by Mun Manal, the founder and visionary behind Ukkō. His warmth and passion were immediately evident, and as he called upon one of his expert waiters to guide me through the Ukkō experience, I realised that this was not just a restaurant; it was a carefully curated journey.
“We opened in November 2021,” Mun explained, his eyes constantly sweeping the room, ensuring that no guest went unnoticed. “I’ve been in the restaurant industry for 24 years, managing upmarket establishments. But when the uncertainty of the pandemic hit in 2020, I knew it was time to step out and create something that reflected both my passion and my belief in the transformative power of food.” And that is precisely what Ukkō has become – a space where every detail, from the décor and lighting to the plating, speaks to a dedication to excellence.
As the first of Ukkō’s signature dishes arrived, I immediately understood why this restaurant has garnered such loyal patrons. Each bite was an ode to culinary artistry – food, here, is more than sustenance. It’s a language of culture, passion and creativity. The Camembert Phyllo, deep-fried to golden perfection and paired with a balsamic reduction and honey citrus, was a revelation. The Caribbean Roll, with salmon, spicy tuna, avocado, and a delicate balance of teriyaki mayo and caviar, exploded with flavour. Every dish was a testament to the collaboration between Mun and his chefs, who masterfully blend Mediterranean influences with contemporary innovation.
From the succulent Beef Tataki to the soul-warming Lamb Riblets marinated in Ukkō’s secret sauce, each plate told a story – of tradition, creativity, and the joy of shared experiences. Here, dining is more than just a meal; it’s a symphony, inviting you to pause, savour and reflect on the beauty of each bite. It’s an invitation to indulge in life’s finer moments, where food becomes a celebration of the senses.
A Culinary Oasis
Ukkō’s appeal goes beyond its carefully curated menu. It’s a space where every detail whispers luxury – from the elegant ambience to the attentive service. As the restaurant prepares to celebrate its third year, it’s clear that Ukkō’s success lies in its ability to create an experience that feels timeless. Whether enjoying lunch bathed in natural light or dining by candlelight, every moment at Ukkō is crafted with care, ensuring that guests feel transported to a world of sophistication and warmth.
Though I was unable to try their signature dessert, the Baked Chocolate, due to being blissfully full, I’m certain I’ll return to complete my Ukkō journey.
Conclusion
Ukkō is more than a restaurant – it’s an experience. From the moment you’re welcomed to your last bite of exquisitely plated cuisine, Ukkō invites you into a world where every detail is a reminder that luxury is found in the small, thoughtful touches. Whether you’re dining for a special occasion or simply to unwind, Ukkō offers an escape into a world of elevated tastes and memorable moments. As it continues to flourish, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ukkō expanding its reach to South Africa’s coastal havens, inviting even more guests to experience its culinary magic.
