Celebrated Durban-based fashion designer Kathrin Kidger is known for her inventive interpretations of the Durban July’s annual themes, but her latest creation isn’t something you wear. It’s something you share.
Gateway Theatre of Shopping has launched From Art With Love, an exclusive gift-wrapping collaboration with Kathrin that brings a new level of sophistication to gifting. Now officially launched and set to remain at the centre for the next year, the experience invites shoppers to discover a limited-edition collection of reusable fabric gift wraps at the Gateway Gifting Concierge on Level 2, near Starbucks.
Designed to bring greater meaning to every gift, the collection transforms wrapping into something worth keeping. Each fabric wrap is designed to be reused in multiple ways, from elegant gift wrap to a statement scarf or decorative accent, offering a more enduring alternative to traditional paper. In doing so, the wrapping itself becomes part of the gift.
Most importantly, From Art With Love also supports a meaningful local cause. The full R120 from every wrapping fabric sold will be donated to The Durban Hospice for Women – Kerr House, a place of safety for survivors of gender-based violence and their children.
YLA: Gateway calls From Art With Love “a gift wrap that keeps on giving.” When you first heard fabric gift wrap, did you think “genius” or “how do I even start”?
Kathrin: Definitely both! It is an absolute genius concept, but the designer in me immediately started thinking about the technical execution and the practicality of the design itself. The idea of reusable fabric wraps that double as luxury fashion pieces aligns perfectly with my ethos. We had to think about drape, texture, and flexibility so that it functions seamlessly as wrapping while transitioning beautifully into a wearable accessory.
YLA: R120 from every wrap goes to Kerr House. Why was that the right cause for this project?
Kathrin: The From Art With Love initiative originally drew inspiration from Mother’s Day, Mother Earth, and the unconditional protective reach of mothers. Kerr House is a phenomenal Durban hospice and place of safety for women and children surviving gender-based violence that does just that. Passing on the full R120 from every purchase directly to them felt right because fashion should empower and protect the most vulnerable in our community.
YLA: Your brand is all about timeless, flattering pieces. How does a fabric wrap fit into that?
Kathrin: A fabric wrap is the ultimate expression of timeless longevity. Traditional paper is discarded in seconds, but these fabrics are designed to be treasured, repurposed, and styled for years. Whether worn as an elegant statement scarf, a head wrap, or integrated as a decorative home accent, it defies the throwaway culture of modern gifting.
YLA: Tropics inspire your clothing. Did that same energy carry over into these gift wraps, or did gifting demand something different?
Kathrin: The rich, vibrant tropical energy of Durban is part of my brand’s DNA, and it definitely spilled over into the wraps. However, gifting requires a unique emotional versatility. I blended organic, nature-inspired patterns with deep, luxurious tones so the prints feel celebratory and premium, ensuring they look stunning when presented as a gift or worn at a glamorous celebration.
YLA: What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given?
Kathrin: The best gift is always time and collaboration with my family and the incredible team in my studio. My mother, Carol, has decades of fashion experience and has been a cornerstone of my career. Having her guidance and sharing our creative journey every day is a gift money simply cannot buy.
YLA: And the worst?
Kathrin: Any gift that lacks thought or heart. I am deeply passionate about local production and craftsmanship, so receiving mass-produced, poorly constructed fast fashion items that break down after one wear breaks my heart a little bit!
YLA: You’ve built your entire career in Durban. Is there anything unique or special about fashion in Durban compared to the rest of the country?
Kathrin: Durban fashion possesses an unfiltered vibrancy and effortless glamour that you don’t find anywhere else. Our warm weather demands breathability and movement, which shape how we interpret resort wear and occasional wear. There is a distinct lack of pretension here. Durban style is highly expressive, unashamedly colourful, and fiercely loyal to local talent.
YLA: In 10 years, what do you want people to say when they hear “Kathrin Kidger Designs”?
Kathrin: I want them to say, “That is a brand that stayed true to its roots, empowered South African women, and valued quality over trends.” I want Kathrin Kidger Designs to be remembered as a staple of homegrown luxury that proved fashion can be both beautifully glamorous and deeply purposeful.
