What would you do if art interrupted you? Not politely. Not with permission. Just appeared. Something vivid, visceral, and unannounced — right here in Joburg. That’s the energy behind Contra.Joburg, returning on 30-31 August 2025 with its most expansive edition yet.
Set across working studios and unexpected corners of Joburg’s inner city, the festival invites you into a living conversation with creativity. Over two days, more than 170 artists, designers, and makers will activate 12 venues, transforming the CBD into a constellation of encounters not just with art, but with the city itself. To make navigating it all effortless, your Contra ticket includes access to a shuttle service linking each location, allowing you to explore at your own pace.
A standout of this year’s Contra.Joburg programme is Vintage x Vanguard, a curated collaboration with Stephan Welz & Co., South Africa’s leading name in fine art and luxury. For this project, participating Contra artists were invited to select vintage objects — heirlooms, curiosities, fragments of the past — and transform them into contemporary artworks. The result is a collection as much about memory as it is about reinvention. In a city shaped by layered histories, both personal and political, these reimagined pieces speak to the power of transformation — not just of objects, but of how we see, hold, and honour the past.
The Vintage x Vanguard exhibition will be on view at Stephan Welz & Co.’s Waverley premises, which also serves as as a convenient park-and-ride hub for Contra.Joburg festivalgoers. From there, visitors can explore these bespoke pieces before catching the shuttle into the city. The collection will also be available online via the newly launched Welz Boutique, a platform that blends tradition with contemporary luxury, giving collectors nationwide access to these one-of-a-kind artworks.
At its heart, Vintage x Vanguard aligns perfectly with Contra’s ethos: putting artists first, embracing disruption, and engaging deeply with place and material. It champions sustainability, turning forgotten pieces into something treasured once again.
In this meeting between the vintage and the vanguard, luxury is redefined as something that carries history, invites imagination, and leaves space for new stories to unfold.
