The surrounding bushveld has guided every design decision, from the organic forms to the tactile palette of wood, stone, bamboo, and rattan. Earthy tones—think ochre, terracotta, and muted greens—anchor the interiors, creating a seamless dialogue between indoors and outside. As designer Caline Williams-Wynn explains, the intention was to “build on Saseka’s timeless aesthetic ensuring every element contributes to an atmosphere of understated, quiet luxury.”
New Spaces for Dining and Connection
One of the most striking additions is the new indoor dining space; a sophisticated yet intimate retreat designed for cooler evenings or rainy afternoons. Here, layered textures create an inviting space, while double-sided fireplaces flicker gently. Bespoke timber lighting and handcrafted stained-glass pendants introduce artisanal elegance, complemented by botanical-inspired artworks that echo the landscape beyond.
Flowing naturally from this space is the new bar, where timber detailing and herringbone seagrass inlays lend a tactile richness. It’s an inviting setting for pre-dinner drinks or a nightcap beneath the African sky—ideally paired with a botanical-infused cocktail that mirrors the flavours of the bush. Adjacent, a thoughtfully curated wine room calls for guests to explore a selection of South Africa’s finest vintages.
Beyond the interiors, the reimagined boma offers a fresh take on a quintessential safari tradition. While its essence remains rooted in communal storytelling and fireside dining, subtle contemporary touches such as handmade ochre-tiled counters bring a renewed sense of style to this time-honoured space.
Wellness Takes Centre Stage
Perhaps the most transformative addition, however, is the new wellness and gym facility. Not your traditional spa, this space has been conceived as a holistic sanctuary—one that prioritises movement, recovery, and mindful connection. A lap pool sits alongside a cold plunge and infrared sauna, inviting guests to recalibrate both body and mind.
Expanding the Little Saseka Experience
Equally noteworthy is the expansion of Little Saseka, the camp’s exclusive-use private villa. Now accommodating up to six guests, this intimate retreat has been extended with two additional suites, offering enhanced flexibility for families or small groups seeking privacy without compromising on luxury. Thoughtfully designed to maintain its sense of seclusion, Little Saseka continues to embody the quiet exclusivity that defines the Thornybush experience.
Sustainability at the Core
Sustainability, too, has played a meaningful role in the refurbishment. Existing structures have been preserved wherever possible, while materials such as original decking have been repurposed into new cladding and finishes. This approach not only minimises environmental impact but also reinforces the camp’s connection to its surroundings.
The result is a lodge that feels both familiar and entirely renewed—a place where every detail has been carefully considered, yet nothing feels overworked or contrived.
